  1. Assistant Provost’s Report – R. Winn reported that he has been working with Marketing and Communications to put together promotional and recruitment materials for graduate studies and for individual programs. Department Heads and Program Directors have received emails with requests for information about their programs. This information will be used to develop promotional and recruitment materials. R. Winn also reported that they are working on streamlining the online graduate application process. It is anticipated that by January, letters of recommendation will be able to be uploaded using a submission link.
  1. Chair’s Report –K. Galbreath welcomed new GPC members and provided a few updates. Since the last GPC meeting in September, the MPA program changes and two nursing directed study courses (NU 898 and NU 897) were approved by GPC via e-vote. A report was sent to the Academic Senate.
  1. Graduate Student Association Report – R. Broughton introduced himself and provided some updates on GSA activities. The group is working on coming up with ways to increase membership. They are planning on hosting a social event on October 21st in the Peter White lounge. They are also considering whether to offer a workshop in November to discuss the Excellence in Education application requirements.

a.Course and Programs (Members 2016 – 2017; TBD)

  1. CLS 416 – Considered for graduate credit – Strahan/Jensen – Approved. GPC reviewed CLS 416 for graduate credit. The course is currently offered toundergraduate CLS majors with concentrations in Diagnostic Molecular Genetics and is recommended for CLS majors with a Laboratory Medicine concentration. The course was revised so that graduate-level biology and other graduate students interested in diagnostic medicine / genetic detection of disease will have an opportunity to take the course. A letter of support from Mike Strahan, library liaison, was provided in addition to the new course proposal and supporting documents.

  1. Policy (Members 2016 – 2017: TBD)
  1. GPC Bylaws revision – committee membership – GPC was asked by Rachel Nye, Chair of the Academic Senate, to review and comment on a draft revision of the Senate bylaws. In particular, Article 7, which deals with Senate committee membership. After reviewing the document, questions were raised about equal / unequal faculty representation on GPC (in reference to discipline) and whether more or less than ninefaculty should be on the committee. The policy subcommittee will work on developing language that addresses this issue and the bylaws will be updated with the new language.
