PHILOSOPHY

P&HE in the International Baccalaureate “Middle Years Program” (MYP) is concerned with more than sports and games. Its clear goal is to contribute to the students’ physical, intellectual, emotional and social maturity. At the same time they will develop the teamwork, co-operation and personal engagement that are vital in the modern global workplace.

GRADING

Grading is updated on a regular basis on Power School. Make sure you know your user name and password to check grades on a daily basis.Homework: ONE DAY LATE IS 10% OFF. Homework assignments can be located at:

Criterion A – Knowing and Understanding 15%

Criterion B – Planning for Performance 25%

Criterion C –Applying and Performing 35%

Criterion D- Reflecting and Improving Performance 25%

(No Extra Credit will be given in PE)

ATTENDANCE

Since physical education is a participation class, students can earn 8 points per week. You receive 0 points forthe day if you are absent. Therefore, you will need to complete a make up assignment in order to earn that day(s) points.

ABSENCE MAKE UP ASSIGNMENTS

The students can achieve 8 points per week for Social Skills and Personal Engagement. AN ASSIGNMENT MUST BE TURNED IN IF YOU ARE ABSENT FROM CLASS! The student has TWO WEEKS to complete this make up assignment. The points will be recorded in the week they were absent.The following is a list of possible make up assignments:

  1. Attend or watch an athletic event. Write a report on the game.The report should include the date, time, location, score, opposing team, and any exciting plays. Did you enjoy the game and will you attend or watch another?
  2. Make a collage of your favorite sport, team, or player. A paragraph must be written on the collage, describing the theme.
  3. Write a report on the Olympics.
  4. Write a report on your favorite team or player.
  5. Read an article from a magazine or newspaper on anything that relates to Health or physical education. Write asummary of the article.
  6. Make up your own report. Be sure to have it approved by your teacher.

DAILY PARTICIPATION

Here are the ways you can lose daily participation points:

  • Not participating
  • Leaving class without permission
  • Not cooperating
  • Not sitting at class numbers
  • Chewing gumor eating
  • Taking equipment from the carts
  • Not running laps
  • Not playing by the rules
  • Stretching improperly
  • Foul language
  • Incorrect shoes
  • Placing backpack in the wrong location
  • Not completing sick/injured written assignment
  • Using cell phone/not placed in backpack

TARDY POLICY

All students must be sitting on their numbers by the time the tardy bell rings or they are at risk of losing participation points. The only exception to the tardy policy is when it is raining. In the case of rain the students will meet at the lunch benches, and line up in numerical order. Students may NOT leave class to get their shoes.

MILE RUNS & MAKE-UP MILES

For each mile run,on their mile log, the students will record the date, time and appropriate information. If they are absent or injured, they will note this by the date, and then record the necessary information when they run the make up mile after school on any given Tuesday. No extra credit miles or running a mile to make up for an absence will be allowed.ALL make up miles will be run on Tuesday’s after school at 2:50. Meet at the lunch tables by the basketball courts. If a student is unable to run the mile for an EXTENDED period of time then a homework assignment will be given to make up for the missed mile(s) and must be given to the teacher within one week. One day late – 10% off The mile run will be graded on an 8 point scale.

PE FOLDER

The students will be required to have a “Pee Chee” type folder exclusively for PE. The folder must have two pockets on the inside, and have the students name, teacher’s name, and period on the outside. The students will keep all the papers with or without a grade in the folder.

ILLNESS OR INJURY

If you are at school and can’t participate in P.E. for a medical reason, you need to bring a dated note to excuse you from a parent/guardian. If the illness/injury occurs prior to P.E. you must bring a note from a parent/guardian the next day.If illness or injury is for longer four or more days we ask for a doctor’s note stating what activities you can or can’t do, and for how long. Please let your teachers know if you injure yourself during class time.If you have any medical problems that may be affected by physical education such as asthma, please bring in a doctors note and give a copy to the school nurse and your PE teacher. If you are in class and are injured or sick you must complete a writing assignment to get your daily participation points.

DRESS

Time will be provided for those who would like to change clothes. Permission must be granted by the student’s teacher prior to leaving class to change. Rain or shine always come prepared for physical activity

  • Sturdy laced-up tennis shoes are mandatory.
  • Dress in clothes that you can sit on the blacktop or grass
  • Shorts must be worn under skirts.
  • No heeled shoes/Boots

CITIZENSHIP

Throughout the year, the students are expected to develop the attributes on the IB Learner Profile: Balanced, Thinker, Open-Minded, Knowledgeable, Principled, Inquirer, Risk-Taker, Caring, Communicator, and Reflective. Students will be given a citizenship grade each semester: (S = Satisfactory, N = Needs Improvement and U=Unsatisfactory).. Cheating on the mile run or any assignment will result in a “0” for the assignment, detention,and your citizenship grade will be lowered to a “U. Three of the same violations will result in an “N” and four violations will result in a “U”.

  • Incorrect shoes
  • Student is tardy to class or plays after the whistle at the end of class
  • Using cell phone/Visible phone
  • Gum/Food
  • No parent note to be out of PE
  • Standing when instructed to sit

WORK HABITS

The students will be graded on the following scale for work habits 3 - Consistently Performs, 2 - Inconsistently Performs, and 1- Rarely Performs. Three missed miles or assignments will result in a 2 and four missed miles or assignments will result in a 1. Lack of participation in class will result in a lowered work habits grade.
