An opportunity has arisen for a permanentHospice Physicianto join the medical team at Strathcarron Hospice. You will be a fully registered doctor with an interest in the field of palliative care medicine. Previous experience of working in a palliative care environment is advantageous but not essential, as full training will be given. Candidates should also ideally have a postgraduate qualification. We are seeking applications from candidates interested in working either 6, 8 or 10 sessions per week with participation in an on-call commitment of 1 in 5, (averaging and additional 2 sessions per week).

JOB DESCRIPTION AND TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

TITLE:HOSPICE PHYSICIAN

REPORTING TO:HOSPICE CONSULTANTS

HOURS:6, 8 or 10 SESSIONS

(WITH ADDITIONAL ON CALL COMMITMENTS OF 1 IN 5)

JOB PURPOSE

The Hospice Physician(s) will support the Consultants in providing a full range of Specialist Palliative Care in the Hospice and Day Care Unit.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL

1.Hospice

To assist Consultants in:

a) Assessment and management of in-patients.

b) Communication with and support of relatives and staff.

c) Participation in education programme and multi-disciplinary meetings as practical.

2.Day Care Unit

a) Attendance at Day Care Unit on a rota basis for assessment and management of Day Care patients.

3.Out of Hours Rota

a)Participate in this rota on a 1:5 basis. Carry out daily ward round at weekend when on call.

b)Assist in providing 24 hour telephone advice to GPs and other health care professionals when on call.

EDUCATION, CLINICAL AUDIT AND RESEARCH

a)Contribute to the undergraduate and post-graduate education programmes as specified by Consultants.

b)Update regularly own knowledge and skills in palliative medicine.

c)Assist in research programme in Hospice.

d)Assist in Day Care clinical audit as appropriate.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

1.In general the terms and conditions of service for NHS Hospital Medical and Dental Staff apply except for specific aspects described below.

2.The Hospice Physician(s) will take a full part in routine patient care during an agreed number of sessions (not less than six) per week in accordance with the job plan and provide emergency care including on-call (one in five) from home, returning to the Hospice when required. The Hospice Physician(s) should be a car owner/driver

3.Staff will be automatically enrolled with the Local Government Scheme. Pension rights accrued within the NHS Scheme are transferable to the Local Government Scheme.

4.The offer of the post will be subject to medical examination and the Hospice has the right to request a medical examination at any time.

5.A job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate.

6.No fees are payable for reports e.g. categories 1 and 2 of the NHS terms etc., except that cremation fees may be retained.

7.Fees are not payable for lectures given in, or on behalf of the Hospice. Local policies govern fees by outside bodies.

8.Sick leave will be allowed in accordance with NHS terms and conditions of service. Previous service is not recognised for purposes of continuous employment.

9.Six weeks pro rata Annual Leave plus eight Public Holidays will be allowed each year which will run from 1 April to 31 March.

10.Continuing medical education will be seen as an ongoing requirement. Applications for study leave will be considered on their merits.

11.Travelling, subsistence and other approved expenses shall be paid to meet actual disbursements. Payment will be within rates agreed by Whitley Council but subject to local restriction of up to maximum engine size for cars of 1500 cc.

12.Doctors are expected to live within reasonable travelling distance (45 minutes) of the Hospice and must consult with the Director prior to choosing a specific location or changing an existing location. There will be no entitlement to removal expenses but consideration will be given to reimbursing the actual cost of removal of furniture and household effects.

13.Salary will be paid according to the rates for Hospice staff. Salary will be paid monthly in arrears by bank giro credit.

(Specialty Doctors Grade is available subject to experience).

14.During the term of the contract the minimum period of notice to be given/served will be one month.
