Don T was the Sgt this AM, and started at the other end of the room. Dave E complained that he had no change but was thankful for a great turnout at breakfast last Saturday (it was BUSY!). Jamal is enjoying being a Granddad. Doug thankful for all the MTs and will be “open for business again next Thursday” – proceeds go towards general programs for the Air and Navy Cadets. Don W is a Granddad, again. Randy had occasion to brag about the Jets! Mark survived a great day’s skiing. He’s also a forward planner – 2018 Breakfast with Santa will be Dec 8th. James thanked Doug for being a good bartender (Robbie Burns Day at the Legion). Don T survived a retro-hockey weekend. Jamal was the winner of this morning’s draw!

Rotary Minute

Why did you join Rotary?

Why have you stayed in Rotary?

How have you benefited from being a Rotarian?

A “few” years ago Don T responded to an ad for a “Free Trip to Mexico” – which turned out to be a Rotary-sponsored GSE (Group Study Exchange) with 5 other professionals to Mexico for a month. On return, he was invited to join Rotary in Duncan. … and was ‘hooked’.

Rotary helps him stay connected with his community through our speakers and activities, and through our morning camaraderie.

Community Service

COLDEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR – Dale W is walking in the “Coldest Night of the Year” - a fund raiser for the Island Crisis Care Society. He is walking to raise money for hungry, homeless and hurting people in Nanaimo. If you’d like to support him, you can do it on-line, easily:

Why not plan to visit the Nanaimo Boat Show, April 12th to 15th – all funds raised go to the John Howard Society

An Alternative for the Governance of Nanaimo’s Harbour

Odai Sirri talked to us about an alternative form of management for Nanaimo’s Harbour – currently managed by the Nanaimo Port Authority (NPA), created in 1998 by the Canada Marine Act to manage the operation of the Port of Nanaimo.

The Nanaimo Marina Association represents clubs, marinas and about 1500 boaters that used our Harbour – and was formed to address the [unfair] rate approach set by the NPA that has caused a significant increase in lease fees over the past 5 years.

When docks ‘touch’ the water, they become the property of the NPA – so it’s a challenge for operators to develop facilities that are “not their own”. Different jurisdictions  different lease rate structures  marinas caught in the middle of a bureaucratic blame game.

Odai noted that “…we need to work together as a community to build a harbour that is responsive, reflective and serves the needs of our community. After all, we are the Harbour City.

The Bridge

A man on his Harley was riding along a California beach when suddenly the sky clouded above his head and, in a booming voice, God said, 'because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish.'
The biker pulled over and said, 'Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over anytime I want.'
God replied, 'Your request is materialistic; think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking; the supports required reaching the bottom of the Pacific and the concrete and steel it would take! I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of something that could possibly help mankind.'
The biker thought about it for a long time. Finally, he said, 'God, IWish that I, and all men, could understand women; I want to know how she feels inside, what she's thinking when she gives me the silent treatment, why she cries, what she means when she says nothing's wrong, why she snaps and complains when I try to help, and how I can make a woman truly happy.
God replied: 'You want two lanes or four on that bridge?
