Patapsco Physical Education

PHILOSOPHY

Physical Education plays a vital role in the education of the whole child and provides a variety of opportunities for a middle school child to develop physically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially.

Physical educators provide students with a variety of learning experiences to enhance fitness level, skill development, and self-confidence. The Howard County Physical Education curriculum states that each student will focus on four content areas in Physical Education: Learning to be Fit, Individual and Dual Sports, Team Sports, and Movement with a Beat. Through activities and sports in these four content areas, students are given the opportunity to combine their knowledge, skills, creativity, ingenuity, and perseverance to cope with new and challenging situations. Physical Education provides a non-threatening environment for experimenting with movement, behavior, and learning patterns. Students are challenged to work both as individual and cooperative learners. A positive Physical Education experience lays the foundation for a desire to develop and maintain a healthy and physically active lifestyle.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

GUIDELINES FOR APPROPRIATE DRESS,

FOOTWEAR, AND JEWELRY

Students can purchase a Patapsco Middle School PE uniform at any time during the year.

Checks can be made payable to Patapsco Middle School. See Mrs. Burgess, Mrs. Clever, or Mr. Capecci for specific uniform pricing. Uniforms will be sold during the first week of every quarter, but can be purchased at any time throughout the year.

If a student does not purchase a Patapsco uniform, he or she may wear loose fitting clothing; shorts and t-shirts brought from home.It is required that the shorts are navy blue or black and the shirt is either grey or white. When the weather gets colder, it is recommended that students bring sweatpants, sweatshirts, hats, gloves, scarves, etc. Please make sure jeans, khakis, clothes with buttons, belts, and zippers are not worn in PE. Tank tops, cut off shorts, tube tops, and inappropriate attire should not be worn for physical education.

Students are required to change from their school clothes into appropriate dress for Physical Education class.

Proper footwear is also required to participate in Physical Education. Athletic shoes help support and protect the foot in order to improve performance. Please, no slip on shoes, boots, sandals, dress shoes, flip-flops or clogs.

Fields may be damp in the morning, so an extra pair of socks and/or shoes is recommended.

All uniforms are to be taken home and washed over the weekend.

NO jewelry of any kind is to be worn during physical education class. This is for the safety of the student and others around them.

WILL YOUR BELONGING BE SAFE DURING CLASS?

WHY DOES MY CHILD NEED A COMBINATION LOCK?

  • Every student needs their own lock for their PE locker
  • DO NOT SHARE YOUR COMBINATION WITH YOUR FRIENDS
  • Lock up all clothes and valuables during class
  • Try not to bring a lot of money or expensive jewelry to school
  • TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN BELONGINGS

POLICIES FOR LIMITED PARTICIPATION

AND MEDICAL EXCUSES

If a student attends school they are EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE in Physical Education. The student should communicate with their teacher about how they are feeling. You may perform according to how you feel. We encourage all students to be an active participant in physical education classes, even if it is a modified form of activity. This is also the case if you are returning to school after an illness.

Your teachers want to be considerate about how you are feeling, however, we also know that laziness can become a habit.

A written medical excuse from a parent or guardian will be honored for a maximum of TWO DAYS. If further time for a medical excuse is necessary, a note from a physician or doctor is required. Included in the note from the doctor should be: a description of the injury, restrictions regarding the level of participation, and length of restriction from activity.
