P7 Learning Intentions (Term 1)

PRIMARY SEVEN CURRICULUM OVERVIEW TERM ONE

English

Reading

  • Read independently a range of text for enjoyment and be able to talk about their interests and preferences.
  • Show understanding of significant ideas, themes, events and characters and make use of appropriate vocabulary when referring to texts.
  • Empathise with and discuss actions of characters.
  • Recognise explicit and implicit meanings and attitudes when making references and deductions.
  • Understand perceived intentions of authors and be able to give personal responses, supporting these with reference to the text.
  • Develop ability to look at events from different perspectives.
  • Use a variety of reading strategies e.g. skim, scan,

re-read, underlining.

  • Select relevant information from text to support answers.
  • Understand the use of nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs and pronouns.
  • Understand the difference between fact and opinion.
  • Understand the difference between true and untrue, fiction and non-fiction.
  • Recognise and understand a variety of different text structures e.g. Diary, Newspaper, Encyclopaedia, Novel – Under the Hawthorne Tree.

Writing

The children will experience writing in a variety of genre e.g. recount of a given story, reporting of a factual nature, explanation of views, opinions and understanding. They will be helped and encouraged to use accurate punctuation – capital letters, commas, apostrophes, speech marks, question marks and exclamation marks. They will be encouraged to present their work neatly.

Talking and Listening

Your children will be given opportunities to develop their talking and listening skills formally and informally through a range of activities.

Linguistic Phonics

Pupils will use word recognition, word decoding and word manipulation to gain a knowledge and understanding of a focused sound for the week. This will be related to their weekly spellings.

Grammatical Awareness

Grammatical awareness is important in all areas of the curriculum. You child will be developing skills in capital letters, full stops, question marks, comma, speech marks etc. They will also develop their understanding and knowledge of literacy terms such as noun, verb, plural, adverb etc.

Maths

Number

  • Read, write and order 4, 5, and 6 digit numbers.
  • Understand the value of digits in 4 and 5 digit nos.
  • Recognise and understand the number of 10s, 100s, 1000s that are in a given number.
  • Round Off numbers to nearest 10, 100, 1000.
  • Multiply and divide numbers by 10, 100 and 1000.
  • Have quick recall of table facts.
  • Be familiar with the use of brackets in maths equations
  • Be familiar with and be able to use number function machines and reverse the procedure.
  • Understand and use the terms factors, multiples and prime.
  • Understand and use the terms square, cube and triangular numbers.
  • Solve multiplication/division problems. (Pupils should be able to estimate their answers with reasonable accuracy.)
  • Know that x and  are inverse operations
  • Be familiar with and use decimals to 2 decimal places.
  • Order decimals.

Weight

  • Be able to estimate, with reasonable accuracy, weight of everyday objects.
  • Know the relationship between grams and Kg.
  • Be able to read a variety of scales.

Capacity

  • Estimate and measure with reasonable accuracy capacity of everyday objects.
  • Know relationships between litre and millilitre.

Length

  • Have an understanding of the basic units of measurements.
  • Know the relationships between units of length

(mm, cm, m, km)

  • Be able to convert from one measurement to another.
  • Be able to estimate size of everyday objects.
  • Be able to solve problems using measurements.
  • Be able to read a variety of scales.

Area/Volume

  • Be able to find area by counting squares and volume by counting cubes.
  • Be able to calculate areas and volumes of simple 2D and 3D shapes.

Perimeter

  • Calculate the perimeter of simple and complex shapes.

Time

  • Know the units of measurement of time and the relationships between them. Recognise times on the analogue clock, including the hour, half and quarter hour, five minute intervals and one minute intervals. Understand the relationship between the 12 and 24-hour clock. Understand the relationship between analogue and digital. Understand timetables and solve problems relating to time.Know the months of the year and understand calendar patterns.

Fractions

  • Be able to use and understand fractions. Be familiar with equivalent fractions. Be able to simplify and order fractions. Be able to solve problems involving fractions. Be able to convert between irregular fractions and mixed numbers.

Percentages

  • Understand and use relationship between Fractions, decimals and Percentage (out of 100). Solve problems involving percentage.

Negative Numbers

  • Understand and use negative numbers in context.
  • Be able to solve problems involving negative numbers.

Scale

  • Understand and use scale in simple maps and drawings.

Patterns/Sequences

  • Understand, explore and predict basic number patterns and sequences.

Handling Data

  • Be able to sort, record, represent and interpret a range of data using a variety of diagrams and graphs. (e.g. Venn, Carroll, Tree)
  • Be able to interpret a range of tables/lists/graphs/diagrams used in everyday life. (e.g. block, bar, pie, tally)
  • Be familiar with and use a Data Collection Sheet.
  • Understand and calculate the mean and range of a set of data.
  • Be familiar with the language associated with probability. Understand and be able to place events in order of likelihood.

Angles

  • Understand the concept of turning linked to angles.
  • Know 8 points of the compass.
  • Be familiar with clockwise/anticlockwise.
  • Recognise and be able to sort angles.
  • Be familiar with angles in quadrilaterals and triangles.
  • Understand the terms; acute, right, obtuse and reflex.

Coordinates

  • Be able to read and name co-ordinates.
  • Be able to plot co-ordinates in 1st quadrant.

Shape

  • Be familiar with and describe main features of regular and irregular 2D shapes. Be able to classify regular 2D shapes according to angles, sides, shape, lines of symmetry including rotational
  • Be able to reflect shapes using a mirror.
  • Be able to see and explore patterns and tessellations.
  • Be familiar with and describe main features of common 3D Shapes. (faces, edges, vertices)
  • Understand and use nets of common 3D shapes.

Physical Education

In primary seven your child will participate, on a weekly basis, in physical activity.

The four main areas of Physical Education are:

  • Athletics, E.G. running, jumping and throwing.
  • Dance, E.G. exploring dance routines
  • Games, E.G. handling/ passing techniques, hitting and kicking
  • Gymnastics, E.G. travel, balance and transference of weight.

These areas will be visited at different times during the year.

This term your child will focus mainly on the games section.

Assessment for Learning

Your child is assessed throughout the year in a number of formal and informal methods. Strategies of assessment include:

Teacher observation, teacher marking, peer and self assessment, Friday tests, standardised testing and Reporting to Parents.

WORLD AROUND US:

Children will be given opportunities to research and learn about The Victorians and The Famine in Ireland this term. This will be linked across the curriculum. Pupils will develop skills based around the three areas of World Around Us- History, Geography and Science.

Creative/Expressive

Art and music associated to other curricular areas. In term one pupils will mainly look to develop their pencil manipulation skills.
