Volunteers

Applies to volunteers who are Friends of OYT Northdonating a minimum of £5.00 per month by standing order

Volunteers who are eligible are encouraged to seek funding through Trinity House Bursaries or the ASTO Skippership Scheme to cover cost of training or boat charter

Volunteer rewards (*VR)

Volunteers will receive one reward credit per day for sail training voyages on James Cook or Offshore Scout and for days spent helping with winter refit.

Volunteer reward credits may be exchanged for OYT Practical Seamanship Courses or Bare Boat Charter of Lene Sono at the rate of 5credits: 1day on Lene Sono

Rewards will be redeemable during the season following that in which they were earned and will not be transferrable to future years

RYA courses

The cost of 5 day courses is based on 1 instructor and up to 3 trainees.

Cost shown per person includes RYA packs & certificates plus all other expenses while onboard (fuel, mooring fees, food and refreshments)

OYTN Practical Seamanship courses (OYTN PSC)

These are 2 day courses and the cost shown is per person based on 1volunteer instructor and up to 3 trainees

Cost does not include expenses such as victuals, diesel and mooring fees. All expenses will be shared by the (3) trainees

Yachtmaster Prep & Exam

5 day prep with instructor and use of the boat for exam purposes

Cost does not include RYA examination fees

Bare boat charter

Charterer must be a Friend of OYT North donating a minimum of £5.00 per month.

Cost shown is per day for the boat charter.

There must be a minimum of 2 persons on board when underway. This includes:

1Charter skipper

Minimum age 18 years or over holding a minimum qualification of Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence.

2Mate

Suitably experienced aged 16 or over holding a minimum qualification of RYA Competent Crew certificate.

Maximum 6 persons or 4 persons on voyages lasting more than 12 hours

Charterers must lodge a refundable deposit against damages with OYT North Training equivalent to the insurance excess which is £500. This deposit will be returned at the end of the charter period.

RYA Yachtmaster Oceantheory course (including exam)

Unravel the mysteries of astro navigation, using a sextant, ocean passage making, worldwide meteorology and electronic navigation aids.

Who is this course for?

This course is for those aspiring to blue water cruising and is ideal for holders of the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate who are preparing for their first ocean passage.

Topics covered include:

  • The earth and the celestial sphere
  • Practical guide to use and care of sextant at sea
  • Meridian altitudes
  • Sun, star and other sights
  • Ocean passage planning

Venue:Royal Quays Community Centre, North Shields

Date:4th - 6th & 11th - 12th October 2014 (5 days)

Instructor:Caroline Saunders

Caroline is Chief Instructor for OYT North Training and Relief Skipper for Ocean Youth Trust North. She has sailed on James Cook for the last twelve years, initially as a volunteer, with a season as full time staff mate.

She holds a Masters Certificate of Competence for Large Commercial Yachts and is a commercially endorsed RYA Ocean Yachtmaster and RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Examiner and Instructor.

Throughout that period she has worked on a variety of craft including power driven vessels and sailing yachts of all sizes. She sails as 2nd officer on traditional square rig sailing ships.

RYA Day Skipper Theory Course

Course overview

A comprehensive introduction to cruising for new or inexperienced skippers.

This course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by daygiving you a comprehensive introduction to chartwork, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship. It also gives a realistic insight into electronic navigation. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.

Course topics include:

  • the basics of seamanship
  • the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
  • chartwork
  • electronic charts
  • position fixing
  • plotting a course to steer
  • weather forecasting and meteorology
  • tides
  • collision regulations
  • construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat
  • emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts

The syllabus equips potential skippers with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day and gives them basic knowledge of lights, weather and the IRPCS.

The course is taught over 40 hours with two assessment papers. It consists of one 3day and one 2day session spread over a Friday and two weekends.

RYA Day Skipper Theory course is invaluable if you are considering taking the RYA Day Skipper practical course, the key to bare boat charter.

Our staff has a wealth of practical experience gained while running sail training voyages for young people. We sail for seven days a week, seven months of the year in all weathers and sea states. In the course of our work, our vessels navigate around the British coast and abroad calling into many different ports and anchorages.

RYA Coastal Skipper/ Yachtmaster OffshoreTheory Course

Advanced training for more experienced skippers building on the Day Skipper course. This course equips you to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages.

This course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore practical exams, concentrating on advanced navigation and meteorology skills.

Course topics include:

  • position fixing
  • course shaping and plotting
  • tidal knowledge
  • use of almanacs and admiralty publications
  • electronic position finding equipment
  • taking and interpreting forecasts
  • plotting weather systems
  • weather predictions using a barometer and by observation
  • collision regulations
  • customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad

It allows some time for revision of the basics and then moves on to advanced navigation techniques.

Cost: £355 including RYA training pack.Dates: 27thFeb - 1st Mar & 7th/ 8th Mar 2015

The course is taught over 40 hours with three exam papers. It is run over 5 days Monday to Friday.

Anyone attending the Coastal Skipper Theory Course run by OYT North Training will receive a discount when attending the Coastal Skipper practical course.

This is very much a hands-on 5 day course at sea with little time to teach navigation or other theoretical subjects. It is therefore recommended that you take the RYA Coastal Skipper shorebased course prior to your practical course so you can put those skills into practice on the water.Available from OYT North Training.

A course completion certificate will be awarded to successful candidates.

b)Yachtmaster Coastal/ Yachtmaster OffshoreCertificates of Competence

Awarded by the RYA/ MCA on successful completion of an exam.You are not required to take the five-day Coastal Skipper course prior to your exam. However, if you have not previously taken RYA training you may find it useful to complete the course or organise some informal tailor-made tuition available from OYT North Training.
