Key Stage 2 – Year 5 and 6

  • Wednesday afternoon enrichment G and T Literacy/Maths and Science

English

Ks2

  • G and T pupils visit an author as part of National book week at the Bath Literature Festival
  • Visiting Authors often run pupil workshops
  • Lessons are set, allowing for more challenging work to be covered

Ks3

  • Regular Author visits
  • Oakfield Oracle – Newspaper run by pupils during after school club
  • Groups are ability set meaning higher expectations for top sets
  • Use of more technical English language in lessons
  • GCSE experienced teacher to push more able and G and T pupils in writing style, speech and language used
  • Kilve Court opportunities

Science

KS2/3

  • Yr 6 Enrichment activitiesfor G and T pupils
  • Teaching groups set by ability – allowing for G and T pupils to be taught an extended curriculum
  • WIKID scheme of work for ks3 pupils allows for extension activities for G and T pupils which focus on the use of in-depth investigation and interpretation skills

Maths

KS2/3

Art

  • Lessons are open ended at the top to give MA pupils the chance to experiment without boundaries or limits. Extra time is also planned for with extensions for LA pupils as MA pupils in art need longer to complete work to the standard they are capable of.

PE

  • G and TPE clubs, both key stage 2 and 3 giving pupils the opportunity to take part in activities beyond the current PE curriculum
  • Trips – e.g. Cricket at TauntonCounty ground (Somerset vs. India) to see live and professional sportsmen/women
  • Differentiation in lessons - Activity, Resources, Groupings
  • Leadership course to improve communication and leadership skills through sport

Geography

  • Gifted pupils in Geography are set challenges when work has been marked, with further thinking questions being asked of them, usually involving a period of research
  • Gifted pupils are encouraged to question their own learning, observing both sides of an argument, and are provided with wider reading materials in class to aid this
  • Use of Fronter (Computer learning platform accessible from home) and teacher e-mail alongside the Oakfield Twitter feed, which allows pupils to keep up to date with lesson information and to expand on the days learning
  • Humanities club
  • Year 8 have opportunities to design and give lessons to year 7.

History

  • G and T booklets, pupils pick a topic (Romans, Tudors etc…)and create an in-depth booklet

Modern Foreign Language (MFL)

  • More able and gifted students have opportunities for contact with native speakers of French (trips, exchanges of letters in both French and German/cross-curricular projects) through our link with a French partner school. Intercultural understanding is therefore boosted and a realistic exchange is taking place between students.
  • Opportunities to explain grammatical patterns to peers and to peer assess
  • Native speakers attending our school are encouraged by MFL teachers to use their mother tongue within and outside of lessons

Design and Technology (Resistant, Food and Textiles)

  • Differentiation by materials and equipment used, pupils who progress well are able to extend their skills with more complicated techniques and tools

ICT

  • Computer club during enrichment afternoons

Music

  • Instrumental tuition (group and individual)
  • Orchestra for all pupils who play instruments to grade 1 standard or above
  • Choir

  • Opportunities for pupils to perform both in school and within the local community
  • All pupils who learn to play an instrument are encouraged to bring to lessons and demonstrate knowledge to other pupils

Drama

  • Theatre trips (Memorial, Merlin and London theatres)

*PLEASE NOTE – All lessons are differentiated to ensure that pupils with Special Educational Needs, Low/Medium and High ability pupils, and Gifted and Talented pupils are set challenging yet achievable work.
