Job Description: Learning Support Assistant

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE
JOB: / Supporting the learning and development of pupils.
DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO:

MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

SUPPORT FOR PUPILS

  • Attending to the personal and social needs of pupils.
  • Ensuring pupils’ safety at all times, in and out of the classroom.
  • Supervising pupils during break and lunch times.
  • Enabling pupils to be included in all aspects of school life.

SUPPORT FOR TEACHER(S)

  • Support with the planning and delivery of intervention programmes for individuals and groups of pupils under the direction of the teacher.
  • To support the delivery of Individual Education Plans/Individual Behaviour Plans
  • To support individuals/ groups of pupils in class.
  • Keeping classroom/school resources in good order and ensuring classroom is tidy.
  • Assisting in preparation of resources before lessons and tidying afterwards.
  • Mopping up and cleaning when child has had an accident or been sick.
  • Repairing and maintaining apparatus and resources.
  • Assisting in the presentation of work and display areas.

SUPPORT FOR THE SCHOOL

  • Supporting the aims of the school.
  • To be aware of Child Protection procedures and report any signs that a child might be at risk to the Child Protection Co-ordinator
  • Supporting and maintaining school resources and systems.
  • Supporting the establishment and maintenance of positive relations with parents / carers, support agencies and pupils.
  • Support all staff with pupil behaviour around the school and in the playground.
  • Attending extra-curricular meetings.
  • Being aware of, and adhering to, the school’s policies and procedures.
  • At all times, maintain professional levels of confidentiality, sharing information with the Headteacher and appropriate staff.
  • Complete individual training and development and assist in the training of new members of the team.
  • To develop the City Council’s commitment to equal opportunities and to promote non-discriminatory practices in all aspects of work undertaken.
  • To participate in educational visits/ residential activities when required

LUNCHTIME SUPERVISORY ASSISTANT DUTIES

  • To be responsible for the safety, welfare and good conduct of pupils during the midday break, in the absence of or in partnership with teaching staff.
  • To supervise pupils in the dining hall
  • To supervise pupils in the playground areas and on school premises
  • To undertake associated ancillary duties, such as cleaning of spillages, ensuring tables are clean, mopping or cleaning up when a child has an accident or is sick
  • To ensure pupils’ safety at all times
  • Dealing with minor accidents and giving appropriate support
  • To liaise with teaching staff, to ensure issues are dealt with
  • Where appropriate, administering first aid and medication in accordance with LEA policy
