MandatoryLaboratorySafetyRules:

1.Complywithemergencyevacuationprocedures.

2.Accesstoeyewashes,safetyshowers,andfireextinguishersmustbekeptclear.

3.Eatinganddrinkinginthelaboratoriesandanimalroomsisstrictlyforbiddenatalltimes.

4.Eyeprotectionmustbewornatalltimesinthelaboratorieswherechemicalsareusedandwherethereisthepotentialforeyeinjury.

5.Open-toedshoes,sandals,norshorts,areacceptableinlaboratoriesoranimalrooms.

6.Keep the Chemical Hygiene Plan, MSDS’s, and emergency phone numbers in a highlyvisiblelocationinthelab.

7.Immediately report any work related illness or injury to your supervisor and the safetycoordinator.

8.Tasksthatpresentunusualhazardsmustbereviewedwiththeappropriatesupervisorbeforetheyareconducted.

9.Labelsoncontainersmustnotbedefaced,andallcontainersofchemicalsmustbelabeled,listingthecontents,hazards,nameofowner,datereceived,anddateopened.

10.Disposeofallexpiredchemicalsperannualinventoryofthelab. ContactEH&Sforallwastechemicaldisposalsat2-3876.

11.Whenworkingwithcarcinogens,mutagens,orteratogens,complywithallsafetyprocedures.

12.Pipettingbymouthisstrictlyforbidden.

13.Gascylindersmustbefirmlysecuredwithrestraintswhetherinuseorstored. Regulatorsmustberemovedandcapsusedwhenmovingcylinders.

14.Donotmodifyelectricalequipmentyourself.TheelectricalshopwillmodifyorfixelectricalequipmentforyourSAFETY.

15.Labmustcontainafirstaidkitanditslocationmustbeknownbylabmembers.

16.Emergencyphonenumbersshouldbepostedwithinlaboratoryandontheoutsideofthelaboratorydoor(i.e.9-911,EH&Snumber2-3876,PoisonControlCenter, PrincipalInvestigator’sofficeandhomephonenumbers,andother employees’ or students’ homephonenumbers.

ExposureIncident:

Anexposureincidentoccurswhenpotentiallyinfectiousmaterialentersthebodythroughaneedlestick,contactwithmucousmembranes(eyes,insideofnoseormouth,genitals)orcontactwithbrokenskin(rash,acne,cuts,scrape). Ifthisoccurs,

  • Immediatelywashtheinfectedarewithsoapandwaterordisinfectantfor15minutes.
  • Ifitisaneyeexposure,irrigatetheeyeataneyewashstationfor15minutes(donotusedisinfectant).
  • Applyfirstaidifnecessary.
  • Notifyyoursupervisor.
  • Calltheemployer’soccupationalmedicineprovidertoarrangeapost-exposureevaluation.
  • TakeaBloodbornePathogenExposureIncidentReporttotheprovidertobecompletedattheevaluation.
