Situation Update
A 7.9-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal on 25 April 2015 with significant aftershocks. The epicenter was 80km for Kathmandu in Lamjung, Gorkha district, with tremors felt in neighboring countries such as India, Pakistan, China. As of 13:00 today, authorities reported over 1,900 people have been killed and many buildings and homes collapsed.Search and rescue is onging.

The main hospitals in the capital continue to function but are stretched to capacity. Communication and power were still interrupted in many areas. Strong aftershocks continue to be felt with increasing risk of further damage to many of the buildings which are under the seismic standard.

Red Cross Actions
Volunteers and staff of Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) are working around the clock assisting in search and rescue, providing first aids to the wounded and also supportingemergency shelters to the displaced population.

The International Red Cross has allocated approximately HKD 4 million (CHF500,000) from its Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to enable NRCS to response to the needs of affected communities. Additional resources are being mobilized from Red Cross’s hubs in New Delhi, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Personnel with expertise in various aspects are deployed to support NRCS in coordinating immediate response and further assessment.

Due to the large numbers of people unable to access reliable communication infrastructure following the destruction of earthquake, the International Red Cross has launched the following website to offer people online access to consult lists and register names:

Hong Kong Red Cross Actions
The Hong Kong Red Cross has allocated HK$500,000 to support the Red Cross’s emergency relief efforts in Nepal. Hong Kong Red Cross, together with its partner on the ground, is now assessing the needs and gaps, and would actively consider scaling up the level of response with more information to come.
