National Nurturing Schools Programme (East Sussex2018-2020)

Expression of interest form – please return to by Wednesday 31st January 2018

The ISEND Strategy for 2016-18 sets out our shared vision for children with SEND in East Sussex, and the recent announcements regarding the role of schools in supporting an early response to mental health needs further emphasise the need to offer schools a proven method of achieving identified targets. In meeting our overarching aim to improve the lives and outcomes of children and young people with SEND, this project directly feeds into two of the five aspirational strands to deliver a sustainable approach to building capacity to meet need and improve engagement of children and young people.

The successful implementation of this programme in East Sussex will mean that children and young people will receive appropriately tailored support in a school local to them, allowing them to remain connected to their peer groups and home communities, enabling the child to achieve the best outcomes and be as successful as they can in achieving their long term aspirations. This will be supported by a reduction in exclusions and the consequent negative impacts.

You have identified a need within your school to develop a cohesive and wide-ranging approach to meeting the Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and seek to be part of the National Nurturing Schools Programme (East Sussex 2018-2020) project. You are invited to put forward an expression of interest for assistance in developing this provision in your school.

The six principles of Nurture

  • The classroom is a safe base
  • The importance of nurture to raise self-esteem is understood
  • Language is vital for communication
  • All behaviour is communication
  • The importance of transitions for children is understood

The following questions are for information only and will not be used as part of the selection criteria.
Do you already have a nurture group/class in your school currently?
How many fixed term and permanent exclusions was there in your school last year? (Please note that a high level of exclusion would not bar a school from taking part in the project, but there should be evidence of efforts to reduce these rates.)
What is the rate of persistent absence in your school?
Please state why you want to be part of the project.
Please explain what this project will mean for your school. What aspirations or dreams you have for your school’s provision for SEMH need? For example, a nurture group for each key stage, Forest or Beach school for every child, Boxall Profile for every child…
How will you make sure that the project has a high profile throughout your school?
Who, from your school, will take part in the National Nurturing Schools project? (This should be a leader and practitioner.)

The dates for the two days of induction will be 20th and 21st March 2018.

Schools will be chosen by a panel of ISEND members of staff.

Successful schools will be informed by 9th February 2018.

We look forward to receiving your expressions of interest.
