National Geographic Photographer to Jury First Photography Show at the Morean Arts Center

St. Petersburg, Fla. -- The Morean Arts Center is happy to host its first ever juried photography show, The Journey: Photographs Along the Way, juried by the renowned National Geographic photographer Sam Abell. Applications must be submitted by midnight on Saturday, October 15, 2016.

Abell is a teacher, artist and photographer who learned photography from his father at their home in Sylvania, Ohio. He worked for National Geographic as a contract and staff photographer for 33 years after graduating from the University of Kentucky. In addition to his work with National Geographic, Abell has published three collections of his work and maintains an international career as a writer, teacher and lecturer on photography.

It can be argued that no one understands the beauty of The Journey better than Abell. We’re often consumed with the destination and miss out on the beauty of The Journey itself. This juried show asks photographers to capture everything but the destination. Think about everything that goes into a trip – the packing, the navigation and the way you get there. Consider the places you stay – the hostels, hotels, motels, tents and backs of buses. What are you missing when you keep your head down, earbuds in and check out from the The Journey itself?

The exhibition and competition is open to all artists (age 18 or older) who are residents of the U.S. All works must be original, completed within the last two years, and not previously exhibited at the Morean. The fee to enter is $30, and due by midnight on Saturday, October 15, 2016. Awards for the show include $1,000 for Best of Show, $750 for 2nd place and $500 for 3rd place. Entry forms available online at

The Morean Arts Center is located at 719 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg, FL 33701. Questions regarding the exhibition at the Morean Arts Center should be directed to Amanda Cooper, Curator of Exhibitions, at 727.822.7872 x2112.
