Ms. Fleming’s United States Map Quiz

Starting at the beginning of the Spring semester, we will start taking a quiz over the map of the United States once a week. ALL students are expected to master the 50 states. Because of this, you will be expected to score a 95 or higher before you can be exempted from taking the quiz again. You will have 4 weeks to score a 95 or higher. After the four weeks, you will be required to attend mandatory tutorials every Tuesday, for the rest of the year, until you pass it with a 95 or higher. To get a 95, you can miss 3 items on the quiz.

On the quiz, I ask that you use the POSTAL CODE abbreviations for the 50 states. If you write the names of the states instead, they will be counted wrong. While I realize this is an added challenge for many of you, I have every confidence that you will be able to accomplish this goal, especially if you use the link on my website that helps you learn the postal codes.

Spelling and capitalization count on the quiz. Because everything you need to label (with the exception of the 50 postal codes) is listed on the bottom of the quiz, if you spell something wrong or do not capitalize a proper noun, it will be counted wrong. I have given you a copy of the quiz you will be taking on the back of this sheet. Extra copies will be available for the rest of the semester in the “Extras Box” in my classroom.

Your job is to play the map quiz games listed on my website. Your practice packet will be taken up the last week of the six weeks for a quiz grade.

How to find the game websites:

  • Go to my website (murchisonmatadors.org/fleming)
  • Click on “Links” in the orange box on the right-hand side of the page
  • Go to the bottom of that page and click on the link that says “Study for your MAP QUIZ!”
  • After that page loads, look in the “States” column and click “Play” under the States 1 – Beginner banner
  • When the map pulls up, look in the yellow box above the map to see which state you are supposed to click on
  • Find the drop down menu on the left side of the page that says “Game Controls”
  • The default is “All States – Regional”… the most difficult game is the one that says “All States – National”. Try to work up to making a 100% on “All States – National” before moving on to the Postal Codes website
  • Once you have mastered the “Study for your MAP QUIZ!” website you can go back to my webpage and click on “Study for your MAP QUIZ (Postal Codes)!” website to study your postal codes

Assignment for the week of Dec. 3rd: Play the New England States and the Mid-Atlantic States until you score at least in the 90th percentile at least three times. Print out the scores page at the end of the quiz showing this and staple it to the back of this sheet.

Assignment for the week of Dec. 10th: Play the Southern States and Great Lakes States until you score in the 90th percentile at least three times. Print out the scores page at the end of the quiz showing this and staple it to the back of this sheet.

I have read and understand what is expected of me (or of my child) for the map quiz in the Spring Semester.
