IMPT 5-year Strategic plan / CAMI/PHI

MPT Product Development Think Tank / Polly Harrison
(CAMI/ IMPT Consultant) / The TT will focus on Product Profiles that are feasible and acceptable. The Think Tank will commission working groups (WGs) to generate development strategies for each product profile / Identify priority MPT product profiles and next steps for advancing these profiles as part of the MPT initiative.

MPT Regulatory Issues / Population Council
(Martha Brady & Victor Paulusi) / Pop Council was awarded a two year USAID APS to stimulate thinking and promote problem-solving around MPT regulatory pathways by engaging and convening Thought Leaders and experts in the fields of contraception; prevention of STIs, including HIV; product development; clinical study design; and regulatory affairs to capitalize on their collective expertise to help shape regulatory processes for MPTs / Develop a “Road Map” of possible regulatory pathways as a foundation for the approval of MPTs.
Strategic engagement with regulatory authorities will include the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), European Medicines Agency (EMA), Stringent Regulatory Authorities (SRAs), and selected developing country regulatory agencies. / Planned convening on 1.31.2011 re Nomenclature as it pertains to regulatory issues. / Martha Brady

Co Chair; Camille- Staff) / Symposium Goal: Advance the MPT science and translate the science into practical and accessible applications
The planned 2-day, invitation only convening Symposium will be held Nov 3-5, 2011 in Washington, DC.
Participants will represent a multidisciplinary cadre of global experts working in the area of MPTs as well as those with expertise that can help advance the field (eg. donors, media, etc).
Several interrelated IMPT activities are currently underway which will help lay the foundation for the Symposium and IMPT. These activities include the Product Profile TT, the Regulatory Activity, and Messaging. / Through multidisciplinary ‘strategic dialogues’ identify product profile priorities and develop a plan of action for advancing the field
Products will provide a concrete basis for activities that foster the development of multidisciplinary networks globally and regionally to advance MPT development and access.

The matrices are presented in to two main tables: MPT Microbicides and Devices Matrix and the Vaccine Matrix and are posted on the CAMI website. / An on-line database of emerging and available MPTs that will be updated every 6 months. / The WG has convened for over a year.

Awareness

Create a short statement’
on the importance of multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) for sign-on from organizations around the world.
This “endorsement statement” will outline the case for multipurpose prevention technologies and call on governments, donors, researchers and others to encourage the development of multipurpose technologies for the prevention of unintended pregnancy and disease. / Identify strategies to secure support (via RFAs etc) for MPTs at the NIH and etc;
Identify key US-based stakeholders with whom to inform/engage re MPTs;
Develop an ‘endorsement statement’ for MPTs that can be used to show US and global support for MPTs. / On going discussions re. strategies to engage NICHD and other potential domestic donors.
Preliminary discussions with several DC-based and CA-based stakeholders.
‘Endorsement Statement’ verbiage will be finalized upon completion of messaging activity (above) to ensure appropriate and consistent messages to target audiences.

Behavioral& Translational Science / CAMI

MPT Awareness raising and Social Networkng / CAMI/PHI / CAMI created a FACEbook page to raise awareness re MPTs. This includes a project called ‘Global Reproductive Health Dialogues’- a series of testimonials from women around the globe and their need for MPTs; a Survey to engage women re MPTs. Etc
A video on MPTs and the initiative produced. / Increase awareness, understanding and support for MPTs among different audiences / FACEbook is updated every several days with MPT related news/links.
Most recently using Twitter and will be starting a blog to be posted on Huffington Post - with blog submissions by Dr. Criag Cohen (UCSF), who will be reporting on ‘the need for MPTS from the field’- based on clinical work he does in SF and in Kenya, as well as Bethany and hopefully other global and US IMPT Advisors and supporters.
Results from Messaging activity will inform ongoing activities in this area.
