Calculator: A graphing calculator can be useful at times. A TI-85 or TI-86 is recommended.

Schedule: This is an approximate but fairly accurate outline of the topics covered in this 5 week course. You will be evaluated every third day with an exam or quiz. It is imperative that you attend every day and work the majority of assigned problems.

Grading: The final course grade will be calculated from the following components:

5 Quizzes 100 points

2 One-hour Exams 200 points

Final Exam 200 points

Total 500 points

Practice Gateway Tests: Math 208 is impossible to understand unless you remember how to calculate standard derivatives and integrals. There are two web tests available, one on derivative formulas, and one on integration. The tests are available for anonymous practice from any computer with web access and a suitable browser, at http://calculus.unl.edu/gateway.html if the computer systems are not too busy. Note that these are for your practice only and will NOT count toward your course grade.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT: If this is your first college mathematics course, then you may be eligible for 10 hours of free credit for Math 106 and Math 107, provided you get a grade of C, P or better in Math 208 this semester. To be considered for this credit, you should register with the Department of Mathematics, 203 Avery Hall by Friday, July 20.

IMPORTANT DATES: Friday, July 20 is the final date for dropping a course without being subject to a “W” grade. Tuesday, July 31 is the final date for changing to or from Pass/No Pass. July 21 – August 8 is the withdrawal period.

FINAL EXAM: The final exam will be given at 11:00am on Thursday, August 16, in 108 Avery Hall. You are expected to arrange your personal and/or work schedule(s) so that you can take the exam at the scheduled time. Students with conflicting exam schedules may be allowed to take an alternate final, which is always given after the regularly scheduled final. Notify me as soon as possible if you have a conflicting exam schedule. No student will be allowed to take the exam early. A picture ID is required to take the final exam.

Appeals Policy on Grading: The Department of Mathematics does not tolerate discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. If you believe you have been subject to such discrimination or harassment, in this or any other math course, please contact the department. If, for this or any other reason, you believe your grade was assigned incorrectly or capriciously, appeals should be made (in order) to the instructor, the department chair, the departmental grading appeals committee, and the college grading appeals committee.
