Context and Background

Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre opened in 2000 as the result of a successful National Lottery bid and partnership funding from the Tacchi-Morris Trust.

A joint agreement exists between Heathfield Community School, The Tacchi-Morris Trust and Somerset County Council which governs the use of the building.

One of the many great successes of the centre has been to integrate curriculum provision to a much wider audience and build a dynamic programme involving a huge constituency of audience groups, community attendees, performers and young people.

In fulfilling this mission we promote about 300 events and evening and weekendperformances a year. Some 50% of these performances will be by schools, colleges and universities including for example: Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Trinity LABAN, Bath Spa, Weston Academy, Chichester and Falmouth Universitiesetc., as well as a number of local schools, colleges and community groups. This includes Heathfield Community School, who amongst many other things, put on a season of full length plays running over twenty-two nights each year, as well as a number of Dance and Music Festivalsand other events running over a further twenty-two evenings

Adjacent to Tacchi-Morris Arts Centreis Somerset Performing Arts College of Education (The SPACE). This 16-19 Performing Arts College draws young people committed to future careers in the performance sector. The SPACE provides further scheduling and performance opportunities. In the last year the SPACE performed 21 performances either in Tacchi-Morris auditorium or in the 80 seater auditorium at The SPACE. The Centre Director works in close collaboration with all of these groups ensuring that they are scheduled properly and safely, promoted effectively and are financially viable.

The professional programme is very diverse, offering a wide range of shows for adults and young people (many of which have an attached residency or workshop). The programme features prominent national names and artists, cutting edge theatre companies, a range of work for early years and contemporary dance alongside more ‘commercial’ acts such as selected tribute acts and comedy. We also have a large amateur programme and work closely with local theatre groups and artists to support their work.

We run a dynamic range of community classes, over 840 hours per year, catering for all age groups featuring adult classes alongside youth theatre and youth dance groups. There are currently 21classes in operation. Supporting this there is also a programme of enrichment activities for Heathfield students running from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. on Mondays to Thursdays. Our community work is also supplemented by various residencies, funded outreach programmes, day workshops and holiday theatre schemes.

Arts and Educational conferencing is also a vital area of activity generating revenue that helps to balance the Centre’s finances.

We run a programme of inclusive work and support our schools’ programme by running networks for secondary teachers in dance and drama and offer exhibition space to professional artists and children of all ages through the Taunton Learning Partnership.

In addition to this we have a wonderful team of volunteers – some 50 adults and 60 young people – who assist with front of house responsibilities and in return get to have fun, work in a bustling theatre and see shows for free.

The Centre works in partnership with Heathfield Community School and is greatly aided by:

Access to the whole superstructure of the school for various services e.g. personnel services, legal services, resources and reprographics, cleaning/caretaking, IT support but more importantly there is a huge pool of human resources.
Heathfield Community School’s commitment to all children following an arts based course throughout their school life and having access to diverse range of professional arts experiences. This entitlement is underpinned by the Heathfield Community Arts Plan which guides targeted shows for both Heathfield and SPACE students.
A large creative team of teachers and support workers, all of whom are part of the Centre’s mission and 14 Community Class Leaders, many of whom play a dual role in delivering both community and curriculum work.

Conditions of Service

All members of staff at Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre are employed by Somerset County Council and enjoy the same terms and conditions of service as any other employee on the school staff.

One of the unique features of the post is that the Centre’s seasons only run through term times. There are week-long ‘Play in a Week’ schemes run at Easter and in the summer. Holidays are therefore taken during the school holiday period.

Line management responsibility for this post is that of the Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre Director.
