Reporting to the Vice President, Development and Campaign Director, the Director, Development Initiatives is responsible for providing senior level support to the Vice President, Development and Campaign Director and Senior Development Officers (SDOs) in the areas of major and planned gift prospect and donor identification, research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship and will personally be responsible for a limited number of major and planned gift prospects or donors.

The position has a broad range of responsibilities and will be an important member of the Foundation’s leadership.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides day-to-day oversight of all aspects of the major gift and planned gift programs.
  • Devises strategies, together with the VP, Development for obtaining new prospects in order to ensure the ongoing development, expansion and renewal of the major and planned gift prospect base.
  • Qualifies major and planned gift prospects by researching and analyzing affiliations, giving potential, and propensity to donate in order to establish priorities and strategies in preparation for contacting, cultivating and soliciting prospects.
  • Coordinates prospect and donor visit arrangements, including assisting in determining travel destinations, identifying strategic meetings to be booked, booking meetings, as well as overseeing preparations for the meetings.
  • Develops and disseminates reports, with direction from the VP, Development that support the major and planned gift activities of the development operation.
  • Participates in and contributes to the formulation of Women’s College Hospital Foundation development plans, particularly as it pertains to: information systems development; the processes and procedures of prospect management; and related infrastructure support services.
  • Develops, implements and manages systems and procedures in collaboration with the Community Fundraising and Stewardship programs that will support the effective and personalized stewardship of assigned donors.
  • Develops, implements and manages systems and procedures to ensure donor strategies and moves are appropriately documented and agreements are drawn up in accordance with the donor’s wishes and Foundation policies.
  • Plays an on-going and central role in supporting other team members to advance the Foundation’s strategic objectives in building a strong fundraising enterprise.
  • Builds and strengthens relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including prospects and donors, whose support is central to the achievement of the Foundation’s goals and objectives.
  • Understands the role of research in advising strategic direction and possess the capacity to conduct small-scale research to meet immediate needs.
  • Works collaboratively with other Foundation team members.
  • Implements a range of projects to achieve intended outcomes.
  • Advances initiatives with little direct day-to-day supervision.
  • Manages multiple initiatives simultaneously.

Qualifications:

  • University degree and a minimum of 3-5 years in a major or planned gift role with experience in managing the donor cycle from identification to solicitation.
  • Demonstrated track record of strong planning, project management and problem-solving.
  • Ability to organize, manage, prioritize and multi-task a diverse range of assignments and projects with high efficiency; thorough attention to detail and follow through to meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, analyze and synthesize data from a wide variety of sources, and present the resulting information in a clear briefing.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide superior customer service and apply sound judgment and problem solving skills when dealing with donors, volunteers and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting with staff, volunteers and external stakeholders in a collegial environment.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to persuasively and professionally communicate with internal or external stakeholders to secure meetings.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately and with discretion.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Raiser's Edge software programs.
  • Fundraising experience in either an academic or healthcare setting is an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
