Brief for Consultants

Wardown Park Museum has been successful in obtaining second round funding from the HeritageLottery Fund, and other funders to undertake a major refurbishment of its ground floor and some upper floor galleries.

To this end we are seeking to contract an individual to help with the delivery of the interpretation plan for the new galleries, interactives and activities. This is a fixed term opportunity beginning February 2016 and lasting until end November 2016

Working with the Trust’s Collections Manager, Elise Naish , curatorial team and project staff including Local Collections Assistant Curator, Collections Care Officers (core and project team posts) and Curatorial Assistant and the interpretative designers for the project, Imagemakers, the individual will be required to, in line with the current Interpretation Plan

• Research and prepare new interpretation content for displays and interactive and print materials to deliver the Interpretation Plan.
• Work with the curatorial team to oversee the relocation of object displays and reserve collections from the current cases and stores, to the new gallery cases and stores
• Liaise with Imagemakers in the productionof new interpretation graphics and interactives
• Liaise with Museum Makers project lead on provision of information to support coproduction projects and displays
• Liaise with Luton Culture’s Learning team re provision of information to inform developing school sessions and resources
• Liaise with Community Engagement team re provision of information to inform developing outreach programme for the period of museum closure
• Supervise current and new volunteers (Museum Makers) in helping with collections documentation, movement and interpretation
• Support the Wardown Redevelopment Project Director (Director of Arts & Museums) as required, with regard to information to inform specific funding applications where necessary.

It is also essential that the Individual have experience of working independently and they are extremely organised and proactive. They must have excellent written and oral communication skills, adept at distilling and managing information and strong IT skills, including the use of MS Word and Excel and museum databases. They must be UK-based and have the right to work in the UK. The individual will need to work from Wardown Park Museum and then at other venues as the site closes.

The post holder will comply with Luton Culture policies and procedures at all times.

Contract until November 2016. To guide consultants the anticipated programme is as follows:

• Contract start- February 2016
• Anticipated current gallery closure - 4thApril 2016
• Gallery Opening - 21stOctober 2016
• Snagging- November 2016

In line with LCST procurement and the value of the contract,expressions of interest are invited to submit a proposal to deliver this project

The anticipated time for this work is calculated at approximately 3 day per week with a working budget of £30,000 (inclusive of all VAT, and expenses). Payments will be made on presentation of invoices a monthly basis, in line with Luton Culture’s credit control policy.

This is a freelance position and as such, the contractor will also be responsible for declaring any taxable earnings themselves to HMRC.
