DKPL Groundbreaking Event; July 26; 10-12:00.

Our club will be providing tents, set up and break down of same, and if you want stick around & help at the event. Meet at the storage shed at7:30 amto pick up the tents, water tubes, maybe a hose & at least 1 banner to hang. Only need to use the tubes if it's windy.

Set up will be at8:00 amon the west side of the library. Breakdown will be after the event. Should be done by1:00or2:00depending on how long the event runs. Please see Sue Doubler.

Sycamore Kiwanis will be holding a BBQ pulled pork drive up dinner onAug. 14thto be held at the Syc United Methodist Church. Call Steph Forsberg for tickets at815-970-0120or any Sycamore member. Proceeds go towards the Eliminate Project.

Shoe Share Project– Volunteersneeded on Aug 14, from 2-6 pm at the Barb Food Mart in Huntley School. That’s still a Thursday as it turns out. If you can help, contact Jennie.

Aug 9 will see a BARN TOUR. For $20/car you and some friends/family can tour barns, and help out the Glidden Homestead, all at the same time! It’s being put on by the DeKalb Area Cultural and Heritage Association (DACHA). Why does it strike me this has something to do with Svetlana?

Pop Box: Amy asked Jerry Smith to the POP Box today. Jerry & Ging celebrated 40 years of marriage & renewed their vows at the Newman Center recently. Congratulations and Best Wishes to them both.

PROGRAM

Today’s speaker was Jim Lehan, a 4th generation member of the Lehan Pharmacy family. Jim is not a pharmacist but rather an accountant/business manager for the stores. Jim’s parents Tim and Ann were trying to run the business and be pharmacists at the same time until Jim took the business side over from his parents in the last few years. The business was started by Jim and Emery Lehan in Grand Rapids, MI and then moved to DeKalb in 1946. The original location was the Dr. Smith building downtown and has been in several locations since. Currently they have stores on S. Fourth St. in Dekalb, at the Dekalb Clinic, and a specialty, compounding pharmacy in Rockford. The business is truly a family business with about a dozen family members involved out of a total of 55 employees. Since the coming of the chain pharmacies such as Walgreens and CVS, Lehans has tried to focus on lines of business not offered by the chain stores such as durable medical equipment, women’s health and cancer survivor products, and mother and baby support items. Unlike other businesses who fled when chain stores came to DeKalb, Lehans has successfully carved out several niche lines of business to not only stay but to expand in DeKalb. In the last 10 years they have doubled the number of employees working for the company. Jim explained that these are exciting but also challenging times for health care providers especially with the ACA law passed several years ago and now being implemented. The good aspects of the law are mainly that more people now have health insurance coverage. In addition, emphasis on outcomes of patient care is much more important now. For example, patient compliance with taking medicines as prescribed is crucial and now big data exists to help measure how successful a pharmacy is helping patients to take their meds as prescribed. So Lehans is now able to demonstrate that they are better at this than the chain pharmacies with Lehans personalized service to patients. But on the other hand, reimbursements from the insurance companies are lower and the insurance companies are moving more toward networks of preferred providers which Lehans is not part of yet but hopes to become part of in the future. Perhaps best of all for our club is that Lehans has a team of riders in our Biking with Beanzie ride each year!
