CEMETERY ATTENDANT

Job Description

Overall Responsibilities:

To be the Town Council’s attendant in the cemetery and a football attendant at Manor Road football pitches in Keynsham.

Report to:

Senior Grounds Maintenance worker

Duties:

  1. Cemetery

Cemetery and Cemetery Regulations

  • Attend all intermentsassisting the funeral directors and mourners and ensuring that the occasion runs smoothly and all activities are completed properly, legally and with due regard to safety.
  • Prepare (measure and mark out) plots and dig holes for the interments and backfill after interment.
  • Enforce cemetery regulations both initially on site and by reporting any infringements, departures from approved memorials, problems etc. to the Town Council Office to enable appropriate further action to be taken if necessary.

Maintenance

  • Carry out general grounds maintenance tasks including keeping the area tidy, emptying litter bins, topping up graves, gardening tasks and other related duties as required.
  • Regular grass cutting at the Cemetery as per the grass cutting rota.
  • Oversee all aspects of the Cemetery and make regular checks on the condition and status of the plots and memorials taking appropriate action as necessary; assist in programme of memorial safety checks; liaise with memorial masons to ensure stones are placed in accordance with permission granted; maintain familiarity with the site and deal with any irregularities either in person or by reporting to the office if not able to deal with personally.
  • Clean cemetery office and toilet, and keep chapel/storage building clean and tidy.
  • Remedy/report any damage or defects in the grounds and the buildings.

Liaison with public and other users

  • Act as the Town Council’s representative at the Cemetery, helping members of the public, answering queries about the cemetery service, advising on the cemetery regulations and ensuring they are observed, assisting with grave location etc and generally promoting good public relations.
  • Oversee the activity of non-Council employees working in the cemetery to ensure proper and safe working; monitor jobs to ensure they are carried out in accordance with specification/contract, compliance with rules etc; resolve difficulties or report to office if not able to resolve.

2.General conduct in respect of all duties

  • Take a pro-active role; maintain a high level of observation and awareness of working environment and take any necessary action.
  • Maintain good liaison with Town Council office.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements whilst carrying out duties.

3.Sports Facilities

  • To act as an attendant on a rota basis for football at Manor Road.
  • Keep the facility and pitchesclean and tidy.
  • Resolve difficulties or report to office if not able to resolve.
  • Carry out any additional duties as required.

4.Events

  • Attend if requested to do so and be available to work at the Music Festival and other Town Councils events.
