Julianne Baird, soprano, has been hailed by the New York Times as a “national artistictreasure” and as a “well-nigh peerless performer inthe repertory of the baroque.She possesses a natural musicianshipwhich engenders singing of supreme expressive beauty." This estimableartist maintains a busy concert and recording schedule of solorecitals and performances of baroque opera and oratorio.With more than 125 recordings to her credit on Decca, DeutscheGramophone, Dorian and Newport Classics, Julianne Baird is one of theworld’s ten most recorded classical artists. In addition to her majorroles in a series of acclaimed recordings of Handel and Gluck operaticpremieres, recent projects include a Carnegie performance of the leadrole in La Giuditta of Alessandro Scarlatti with subsequent recording.Planned for 2008-09 is the Carnegie premiere and recording ofVivaldi’s Montezuma. Recordings of Handel arias from Alcina andRinaldo with the Dryden Ensemble and a newly commissioned opera areplanned for 2008-09.She recently recorded the Handel Deutsche Arienwith Tempesta di Mare for the British label Chandos. Her newChristmas album with Aulos, In Dulci Jubilo, has already receivedrave notices from the press. Julianne Baird is recognized internationally as one whose“virtuosic vocal style is firmly rooted in scholarship.” Her bookIntroduction to the Art of Singing, (Cambridge University Press), nowin its third printing, is used by singers and professional schoolsinternationally.The Musical World of Benjamin Franklin (CD/Song Book) is published by The Colonial Institute.

Lecture/demonstration on approaches to ornamenting

NATS-LA teachers as well as their students are encouraged to volunteer to work on this repertoire with Ms. Baird.

12:30 pm – 1:30 - Lunch: Potluck at LAVC hosted by NATS-LA Members

Session II. 1:45 - 4:30 – Master Class: Ornamenting Handel, Bach and Mozart

Students of NATS-LA teachers are invited to offer any of the following: Handel’s Ahspietato, Lascia ch’io pianga,

Mozart’s Exultate Jubilate (Mvts. 1-2), L’Amerò, Deh vieni, non tardar (with recit.),and Bach’s Bist du bei mir
