  • To identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator.
  • To use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied.
  • Use search technologies for locating information.
  • To discuss and clarify the meanings of words, linking new meanings to known vocabulary.
  • To skim and scan non-fiction non-chronological report writing for relevant features;
  • To participate in role-play.
  • To generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through discussion, annotated sketches and pattern pieces.
  • To select from and use a wider range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks.

What is a Rainforest?
Start to learn the key information about rainforests through a Senses Journey and a word definition game; create a class rainforest question and answer display board. / Children will
  • Gain geographical knowledge and vocabulary linked to rainforests.
  • Use a dictionary effectively.
  • Search the internet for relevant information.

Session 2

Wherein the world and why are they there?
Develop your geographical knowledge of the rainforests, especially their location in the world; create a physical map using salt dough to demonstrate your learning. / Children will:
  • Develop geographical knowledge and vocabulary linked to rainforests.
  • Locate main world tropical rainforest regions.
  • Create a relief map showing world rainforests.

Session 3
Geography, Computingand English
David Attenborough visits our school!
Search for information about world rainforests; capture your knowledge in a non-chronological report and then create a documentary in the style of ‘David Attenborough’. / Children will:
  • Develop geographical knowledge and vocabulary linked to rainforests.
  • Investigate main world tropical rainforest regions.
  • Write a non-chronological report on a rainforest.
  • Go into role as a TV presenter to give a presentation.

You will need: Post-It Notes; Computers/ Tablets.

Session 2

Provided: Rainforest presentation; Salt dough recipe; Salt dough map resource.

You will need: Large globe; Atlases; Flour; Salt; Tap water; Base boards; Clay tools; Paint; Cocktail sticks; Paper flags.

Session 3

Provided: Tips for non-chronological reports; Writing frame; Question guidance.

You will need: Atlases; Non-fiction books on the rainforests; Flip cameras or other video equipment; Tablets/computers for research.
