First week of school

Teaching the HAWKS Rule! lesson plans

Lesson one—Discuss the importance of rules

Why are rules necessary?

What would happen if we didn’t have rules?

What could happen in a baseball game if the team didn’t follow the rules?

Why do we need rules in school?

What could happen if we do not have rules in schools?

Let us review the rules at Diggs. We call them the HAWKS Rule!

Have respect, Act responsibly, Work together, Keep safe and Soar to success.

Lesson two—learning the HAWKS Rule!

Have a poster with the HAWKS Rule! on the overhead on it.

Have the students read the five rules together.

Have the students individually read the rules.

Encourage the students to try to remember the rules and recite them without looking at the poster.

Lesson three—Review the HAWKS Rule! —Focusing on rules within the classroom

Have students read each of the specific rules corresponding to being respectful, responsible, working together, safety and being successful within the classroom setting.

Let them reference the matrix of expected behaviors for the classroom setting.

Discuss why each rule is important (e.g., why should we raise our hand in class?)

Discuss what could happen if students did not follow the specific rule.

Continue for each rule within the classroom setting.

Lesson four —Review the HAWKS Rule! - Focusing on rules in other areas

Have students read each of the specific rules corresponding to being respectful, responsible, working together, safety, and being successful within non-classroom areas (e.g., hallways, cafeteria, bathrooms, etc.).

Let them reference the matrix of expected behaviors for the non-classroom settings.

Discuss why each rule is important (e.g., why should we walk silently in the hallways?)

Discuss what could happen if students did not follow the specific rule.

Continue for each rule within the specific non-classroom settings.

Lesson five—Have respect, Act responsibly, Work together, Keep safe, and Soar to success Index Card Game(Classroom Setting)

Give each student an index card with a HAWKS Rule! on it.

Each card given will be color coded to help the students with reading difficulties.

  • One card has the words“Have respect” written on it in blue.
  • One card has the words “Act Responsibly” written on it in red.
  • One card has the words “Work together” written on it in green.
  • One card has the words “Keep safe” written on it in brown.
  • One card has the words “Soar to success” written on it in black.

Put a poster on the board with the words in a list:

Have respect (written in blue)

Act responsibly (written in red)

Work together (written in green)

Keep safe (written in brown)

Soar to success (written in Black)

Play a guessing game. Students can reference their HAWKS Rule! matrix to help them figure out the correct category. Use the classroom setting only.

e.g., What type of rule is:

  • Listen politely ( Have respect )
  • Follow directions (Act responsibly)
  • Encourage each other ( Work together)
  • Keep hands and feet to self (Keep safe)
  • Complete work on time (Soar to success)

After you state the rule, have the students who have that category written on their index card hold up the card corresponding to the correct category.

After the students understand the game, let each student have a turn to recite a rule and the other students guess the category.

Lesson six—Have respect, Act responsibly, Work together, Keep safe and Soar to success Index Card Game(Non-Classroom Settings)

Give each student an index cards with one HAWKS Rule! on it.

  • One card has the words “Have respect” written on it in blue.

Use non- classroom settings.

  • Use appropriate voice level ( Have respect )
  • Pay attention (Act responsibly)
  • Take turns( Work together)
  • Stay in your assigned seat (Keep safe)
  • Show sportsmanship (Soar to success)

Vary the non-classroom settings based on your students’ ability to be successful with this game.

Have respect

Act responsibly

Work together

Keep safe

Soar to success
