Left window - contains directory (folders) structure

Large right window - contains contents of selected or highlighted folder (directory)

CREATING FOLDERS (or SUBDIRECTORIES)

  1. Either open Window Explorer from the StartProgramsAccessories menus, or double click the My Computer icon on the desktop. Then select View, Explorer bar, then Folders. You want to see the folders in the left pane and contents in the right.
  2. Go to the View menu option and select Details from the dropdown list.
  3. Double-click the icon displaying your userid (mine is hecker)
  4. The folder will open. This is your p: drive .
  5. Right click in the white space inside the folder and choose NewFolder from the shortcut menu. (or choose FileNewFolder from the Windows Main Menu bar)
  6. Name your folder act301.
  7. Press Enter
  8. You now have a folder to place all your assignments for this class.
  9. Your book should have come with a CD with student files. I also put the student files on the O: drive. O:/CSMP/Hecker/ACT301/Student Data Files. You can move these files as directed into the following chapter files as needed.
  10. Create the following chapter folders within your act301 folder as shown :
  1. Within each chapter folder create the following folders:

prac - This practice folder will be where you will create and store all files and folders needed to complete practice assignments. These are pass/fail assignments.

hw - This hw folder will be where you will create and store all files and folders needed to complete the chapter case homework. These are given a point value.

Exam – This is a storage area for all your exam contents.

  1. Create this same structure in you P: public_html folder EXCLUDING your Exam folder. All Exam files will be sent via email or hard copies of output.
  1. It is very important to get organized and understand file management for this class.
  2. After creating the above folder structure, expand the structure to look like the one above.
  3. Hit the PrtScn button to put an image of your screen into the memory of the computer (clip board).
  4. Open a new page in Word. Right click your mouse in the body of the word page and select Paste. An image of your computer screen should be pasted into your word doc.
  5. Put your name, class, and “File Management” in the right side of the header section of the page.

More File Management

CHANGING DIRECTORIES

  1. In the Windows Explorer View
  2. In the Folders window (the left window) right click a folder with the mouse.
  3. If in the Contents window ( the right window ) you can
  4. Click on the sub-folder and click the mouse twice

NOTE:

If you do not see the folder for which you are looking, use the vertical scroll bar to display the other directories on your disk.

OR

If the sub-folder is not displayed, open the folder by clicking on the‘+’ (plus symbol) in front of the folder name.

REMOVING A DIRECTORY

1. Select the folder you wish to remove (delete).

2. Select File then Delete from the menu.

3. Or right click on the folder name and select Delete from the shortcut menu

WARNING:

When you delete a folder for directory, make sure that is does not contain files that you may need later. All files in the directory or folder are deleted at the same time.

FILE PROPERTIES

1. Select FileProperties

  1. Make any changes you desire
  2. or right click and choose properties from the shortcut menu

SORTING FILES

1. Select View (main menu)Arrange Icons(by Name, by Type, by Size, by Date)

2. or Shortcut Menu Arrange Icons(by Name, by type, by Size, by Date)

FILE DETAILS -

  1. Click file name, from the main menu View Detail

RENAMING Files

A. SELECT the file you want to rename

B. SELECT File from the menu, then Rename (the name of the file will be outlined in a box. Just type a new name or edit the existing one.

DELETING Files

1. One file

A. SELECT the file you want to delete

B. SELECT File from the menu, then Delete

C. Confirm the delete operation.

2. Multiple files

A. SELECT the files you want to delete by holding down the

“Ctrl” key and selecting each file.

B. SELECT File from the menu, then Delete

C. Confirm the delete operation.

COPYING Files

1. One file.

A. SELECT the file you want to copy

B. SELECT Edit from the menu, then Copy ( This sends

a copy of the file to the Clip Board)

C. Now SELECT Paste from the EDIT menu ( This retrieves the

copy of the file from the Clip Board)

2. Multiple files.

A. SELECT the files you want to copy by holding down the

“ctrl” key and selecting each file.

B. SELECT Edit from the menu, then Copy ( This sends

a copy of the file to the Clip Board)

C. Now SELECT Paste from the EDIT menu ( This retrieves the

copy of the files from the Clip Board)
