PowerGrade stability issuesPowerGrade can sometimes have trouble writing to the server and when it does it has been known to create errors in your file. It will always corrects itself over time but there is something you can do to improve the program’s reliability to communicate with the server. If you go Preferences > PowerSchool > note the server IP number. Add to it so that it is more specific and includes a port number after the IP address. The number would be – 192.168.3.250:5071 (add :5071). (This is not absolutely necessary but it will help.)

Creating a FrontPage Web

(Below are some notes and screen shots that attempt to capture the process of managing your teacher web site using FrontPage. I will be meeting with various small groups of teachers and offering help sessions on getting your teacher web site up and running. These notes are from one such session. Some will be able to follow these notes and get a head start.)
Usually FrontPage will open like below; unless you have previously opened a FP Web. Close undesired sites and start fresh (Choose File> Close sites.)

Next choose from the NEW Task Pane {View > Task Pane > select from various options▼if necessary.}
Choose ONE PAGE WEB from NEW WEB SITE Sub Category on the NEW Task Pane. Then single click and choose Empty Web Site. Next choose the physical directory path. Eg. Z:\www

If you get challenged, it may be that you must allow FrontPage to convert this folder or that a Disk Based Web already exists, in which case you will simple choose OPEN SITE and point at that folder.
FrontPage will then create a DISK BASED WEB in the folder you selected. It is important to recognize that this is a local or network folder that is specially marked as a FrontPage Web. When you reopen this you will choose OPEN SITE and point to this Folder (not a file).

It is best to work with the Folder List view on your left. Choose the 6th Toolbar Icon or View > Folder List.

In this case we have a pre-existing FrontPage Web or a folder that has been converted to the same. The home page file is index.htm. It is now open in graphical editing - design mode. Note options at bottom of work area: Design – Split Code/Design – Code – Preview (do not trust previews)

When ready to publish the site to our school’s dedicate web server, simply choose File > Publish Site (or 5th Icon on the toolbar).

Provide the address in the site location field. Note that from outside the school use But from inside if this cause an error, try
Notice the Web Site management tab now shows both Local and Remote panes (window areas). The remote site is almost empty and you have not actually published anything yet. Take note to the Publish all changed pages area / options in the lower right. In this scenario you will want to publish from Local to Remote.

When successful the Remote site is actually showing the same files.

If we open a file on the Local site side, and edit we see that an asterisks * shows near the file name indicating that changes have been made but are not yet saved. (index.htm*) After saving the file on the local site side, this * will disappear.

Change views to show the Web Site Tab. Notice that the Index.htm file is showing an arrow and the status is now changed. If you make changes to only one file / page then you can publish (push) those changes one of three changes ways: 1) drag and drop the file from the local to the remote (assuming that your focus at the directory level is the same on the local and remote side) 2) select the file and click the arrow in the middle column, 3) choose publish site (local to remote) and it will check for changed files and publish all changed files.

Creating a Disk Based Web from an Existing Web: Pulling your Published Web from School to Home

If you want to pull down all of your school files to your computer at home and then edit from a disk based web at home and publish to the school, simply start FrontPage and create a new empty web site in a directory on your computer.

Next choose publish eventhough you have not actually created any content in this disk based web at home. Provide the schools address/username e.g. . If challenged for a username and password and you are using XP simply give your full email address as username and then give your normal login password. You should now see two panes; one local empty web and your remote teacher web .

Now you can publish from REMOTE to LOCAL (this will pull down all the files to your disk based web. You can now edit at leisure and publish as you see fit.

Note that there is a log of all of your publishing activities that you can view.

Managing a Remote Web Folder Directly: Without a Local Disk Based Web

If you want to simply use from page to open your school web and edit directly without having a copy on a disk based web and using publishing methods, you can simply open frontpage and choose Open Site and type in the full address to your teacher site. .

Working this way is basically like a remote control directly to the web server. If you wanted to later refresh your disk based web with newer files from the server, it is easy enough to do with manual or automatic synchronizing. (See the synchronizing options on the lower right in the Web Site Management tab.)

Managing a Web Site without FrontPage: Using Web Folders (WebDAV)

You can also manage your web page files without FrontPage with the use of WebFolders. If you have already opened a FrontPage enabled web on your computer, you will see a web folder link in My Network Places (see the last link in the screen shot below that points to

Assuming you are using a fairly recent version of Internet Explorer and Windows 2000 of higher, then you can open a Web Folder (really a connection method known as WebDAV - Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning) quite easily. From the file menu of Internet Explorer, choose Open, type the address and check of the Open as Web Folder box.

If prompted then will need to provide your credentials (i.e., your full email address and password). You will now see the web folder as files like a regular Windows Explorer window. You can manage files here like you would with any Explorer window. This method is useful for copying files to and from your web folder without having to use FrontPage.
Even though this looks like a regular web page session it is in fact a web folder browse session to a teacher web on the web server. You can copy things down or copy and paste files up. Please do not monopolize the bandwidth by moving large files or groups of files up and down ~ I recommend that you keep sessions to <20 MB transfer during evenings and conduct larger transfers after midnight. DO NOT move EXECUTEABLE files to your web folders. They are a potential risk for Viruses, Trojans and Spyware. Please limit these folders to files related to your web site.
