Kathi Bowles Scholarship for Women in Technology

The purpose of annual Kathi Bowles Scholarships is to recognize women pursuing a technology degree and contributing to their school, university, or community in the areas of service and leadership. The actual number of scholarships and their cash value depend on chapter fundraising activities.

Application Deadline: April 30, 2012

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications must be emailed or postmarked by
April 30, 2012.

Scholarship recipients will be notified by June 15, 2012


Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for consideration, female scholarship applicants must:

·  Have a high school GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale.

·  Currently attend or plan to attend an accredited two-year technology school, a four-year accredited college, or a four-year accredited university in Texas.

·  Be a U.S. citizen or documented permanent resident of the U.S.

·  Never have been subject to disciplinary action by any institution or entity, including, but not limited to, any educational or law enforcement agency.

For High School students: Graduate or graduating senior of a Houston area high school.

For Current Higher Education students (undergraduate, associate or graduate students): Reside within the Houston area.

NOTE: Any student known to be receiving a full scholarship for tuition will not be considered for this award.

Application Submission Instructions: To be eligible for consideration, scholarship applications must:

§  Be submitted via email, or printed and mailed by the application deadline.

§  Provide current and accurate contact information.

§  Be complete and submitted as a Microsoft Word document with physical or electronic signature wherever indicated on the application. If any required information is incomplete, the application will be rejected.

§  Be clearly legible and submitted in English. AWC is not responsible for mistakes made due to illegible applications.

§  Include the required essay as a Microsoft Word document.

§  Include all requested information.

We are looking for female applicants who are well-rounded individuals and who are able to manage their grades and their time, serve their school and/or community, and exhibit leadership skills.

Please include any or all of the following information on your resume:

·  Extracurricular school activities – member, officer, or leader in school activity, club or sport

·  Extracurricular non-school activities – member, officer, or leader in non-school activity such as scouting, philanthropic groups, church groups, or any other community service

·  An estimate of the number of volunteer/service hours you have provided in any of the above listed organizations.

·  Honors, awards, talents, and special achievements you have received in the last 4 years for the community and/or school

Scholarship Agreement

The Association of Women in Computing will contact selected recipients at the phone number, email address, or physical address provided by applicant. The scholarship is contingent upon the following items:

§  No later than the July 15, 2012, the recipient must provide the Association of Women in Computing information about the college or university the recipient will be attending in the fall to allow time for the transfer of scholarship funds to the college or university.

§  If awarded a scholarship, the recipient must agree to provide a written report on her academic progress at the end of the semester after receiving the scholarship.

§  AWC scholarship recipients are honored along with women who have made an outstanding contribution in computer-related fields at our Top Houston Women in Technology Gala or an alternative awards presentation event. Gala proceeds benefit the Kathi Bowles scholarship fund. Scholarship recipients must agree to attend the awards event and be photographed for inclusion in the AWC - Houston website and literature.
