Juliette Gordon Low’s Legacyof Excellence

As the founder of Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low has positively influenced millions of girls’ lives across the United States and in more than 92 countries through USA Girl Scouts Overseas

  • Over a century ago, Savannah native Juliette Gordon Low started the movement now known as Girl Scouts. Beginning with an inaugural gathering of just 18 girls in Savannah on March 12, 1912, Juliette broke the conventions of the time—reaching across class, cultural, and ethnic boundaries to ensure all girls, including those with disabilities, had a place to grow and develop their talents and leadership skills.
  • Juliette Gordon Low’s vision of an organization that would prepare girls to succeed in the world led to a program that has reached and positively influenced more than 59 million women and their communities. Today, the organization she founded touches the lives of nearly 2 million girl members and 800,000 adult members.
  • Over the years, Girl Scout alumnae have gone on to accomplish remarkable things: all three female U.S. secretaries of state are Girl Scout alumnae, as are the majority of women in the U.S. Congress and state legislatures nationwide, the majority of women in business, and the first American woman to walk in space.
  • With the confidence and skills Girl Scouts gain from being part of this great organization, they create change in their communities and the world in inspiring ways. Girl Scouts take on a wide variety of service projects, and the effect on local communities cannot be denied. Whether girls are spearheading local food drives or providing self-defense classes to women in rural India, Gold Award Girl Scouts (the Gold Award is the organization’s highest award) bring about positive change worldwide—reflecting the original spirit of the movement Juliette Gordon Low began more than a century ago.
  • Now, 105 years after its inception, Girl Scouts continues to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place—girls who are leaders in their lives and communities today and will continue to be the bold and fearless leaders of tomorrow.
  • At Girl Scouts, we are proud of Juliette Gordon Low’s life mission to build girls of courage, confidence, and character and her influence on the lives of our 2.6 million members and 59 million alumnae.
