Purpose of the New Role:

The Teaching Technical Managerworks closely with the School’s Facilities and Safety Manager to:

  • manage theSchool’s teaching technicians;
  • manage the provision of practical classes on taught programmes including liaison with colleagues at the School in Malaysia;
  • undertakeroutine safety, security and facilities management for the Pharmacy School Building.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / Management
Responsible for management of the School’s teaching technical staff including:
  • managing the allocation of work
  • conducting Personal Development and Performance Review
  • authorisation of annual leave
  • managing sickness absence
  • monitoringand managing performance to ensure performance standards are met
  • recruitment, training and development
  • re-grading
Arrange regular meetings with teaching technical team to set and monitor targets and goals. Work with the Facilities and Safety Manager to support and develop the wider technical team.
Contribute to developments in policies and procedures at a range of committees and groups including Health and Safety Committee and MPharm Learning Community Forum and the University’s technical managers’ meetings. / 20%
2. / Supporting teaching activities
Responsible for ensuring there is sufficient technical support, equipment and consumables for practical classes and workshops usingin-depth knowledge of the timetable and understanding of the curriculum to ensure the students have a high-quality learning experience.
Work closely with administrative staff to manage student practical groups, ensuring they are timetabled correctly and advising in the event of timetable clashes or problems.
Workclosely with academic and technical staff to plan, improve and update practical classes and contribute to the development of taught programmes.
With support from the Faculty Finance Team, manage a budget for the purchase of all equipment, chemicals and consumables required in the teaching laboratories. Using Sciquest, Agresso or the purchasing card to obtain all requirements ensuring the orders are compliant with University purchasing policy. Assist the Faculty Finance Team with any delivery or payment issues.
Advise on the planning of requirements such as new equipment or items due to changes in teaching and research.
Communicate on a regular basis with staff at the School of Pharmacy at theMalaysia campus toensure the parity of student experience on the 2+2 MPharm programme. Order and send medicines to the Malaysia campus for use in practical classes using in-depth knowledge of the regulations for exporting and ensuring timely and accurate completion of the required paperwork.
Assist with the running of assessment and recruitment events taking place in the Pharmacy School Building such as OSCE exams, UCAS interviews, tours and open days.
Organisation of the recruitment and payment of postgraduate students who work as Teaching Assistants/Demonstrators, including checking legal requirements of eligibility to work in the UK. Ensure timesheets are completed correctly and submitted on time. / 40%
3. / Safety and facilities
Responsible for routine maintenance, safe working practices and security in the Pharmacy School Building.
Support the Facilities and Safety Managerto plan and implement of any major building refurbishments carried out in the Pharmacy School Building.
Ensure that the teaching technical staff operate, and practical classesare run, within University and School health and safety guidelines using an in-depth knowledge of health and safety procedures. This includes ensuring that all risk assessments, standard operating procedures, preparatory notes, PAT testing and laboratory safety checks are completed and maintained on time and accurate records are kept.
Ensure all chemicals are correctly transported, stored, labelled and disposed of using in-depth knowledge of the legal requirements.
Ensure the School van is maintained and insured. / 30%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / HNC or equivalent in a relevant subject.
OR
Proven track record with extensive work experience in a relevant technical or scientific role. / First aid certificate.
Good honours degree or equivalent.
Leadership and management qualification/certificate.
Health and safety qualification.
Skills/Training / Ability to understand, conceptualise and interpret the technical/experimental requirements of staff and students through the application of relevant scientific/technical theory, knowledge.
Excellentplanning and organisation skills.
