Reporting to: News and Media Manager

Aim

  • Lead on high profile PR campaigns to reach key Crisis audiences through national news, consumer, regional, local and online media in support of our marketing, brand and fundraising strategies
  • Play a key role in the Crisis press office, offering communications support across the charity, producing imaginative and compelling content for external media, the website and social media accounts

Dimension

  • Manage specific projects and campaigns as briefed, reporting to the News and MediaManager. Projects to be delivered on time, on brand and to agreed budget.
  • Support management of relationships with external suppliers and agencies
  • Manage freelancers and volunteers

Circumstances

  • 35 hours per week
  • Based in London
  • Flexibilitytowork unsociable hours, especially during the Christmas period and occasional travel around the UK

  • £32,551 per annum

Principle Accountabilities

Media and PR

  • Play a key role in developing and implementing a media and PR strategy to raise the profile of Crisis and engage new supporters
  • Proactively identify and generate stories, content and media opportunities to support marketing and fundraising goals
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key national journalists, including consumer and online media
  • Create imaginative and compelling content for media including press releases, articles, blogs, features, and video
  • Sell in news stories and feature ideas to national, regional, specialist, consumer, broadcast and online media
  • Secure regional and local coverage for Crisis and support local services with media work
  • Set up PR stunts and photocalls
  • Commission film and photography content for use in PR
  • Work collaboratively with the marketing and digital teams to ensure an integrated approach to communications
  • Play an active role in the Crisis press office function, including being a first point of contact for journalists and taking part in the out of hours rota
  • Ensure Crisis key messages and brand tone of voice is reflected in all outputs
  • Use case study material to support media relations activity, interview and create new case studies

Social media

  • Develop compelling social media campaigns and content which deliver to Crisis’ marketing objectives and as an integrated part of PR activity
  • Support the News and Media Manager in creation and implementation of social media strategy
  • Oversight of main Crisis social media feeds
  • Liaise with colleagues who use social media across the organisation to ensure consistency and high standards
  • Stay abreast of new social media developments, experiment and innovate
  • Liaise with colleagues in Digital and Marketing teams to ensure that social media content is well planned and consistently applied.

General

  • Actively encourage and support member involvement within Crisis
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of Crisis’ work and the needs and circumstances of homeless people
  • Comply with Crisis policies and procedures, including Health and Safety policies, for which all employees owe a duty of care both to themselves and others, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Carry out duties that may reasonably be required in the light of the main purpose of the job

Person Specification

Essential

  1. Track record of delivering high profile PR and media campaigns with demonstrable impact
  2. Good knowledge of the UK media, including national, consumer and regional media
  3. Excellent copywriting skills, with the ability to write for a range of audiences across different media
  4. Creative and proactive approach to generating media and PR ideas
  5. Ability to prioritise a wide range of proactive and reactive tasks, ensuring deadlines are met in a fast-moving press office environment
  6. Ability to work sensitively with vulnerable people, including to support people to share their stories online
  7. A proven ability to build relationships with journalists and sell in news and feature stories to national and regional print, broadcast and online media with demonstrable results
  8. Experience of setting up photo calls and overseeing filming
  9. Ability to communicate socially sensitive issues to a range of audiences
  10. Experience of using social media to meet PR goals, including developing content and building engagement
  11. Commitment to Crisis’s purpose and values including equality and social inclusion

Desirable

  1. Good understanding of homelessness issues
