Position Purpose/Summary:

Services to Older Refugees (SOR) program is to provide older refugees and other eligible clients with support, tools and knowledge they need to successfully complete the naturalization process. The Program Coordinator will manage the planning and implementation of naturalization workshops, including arranging venues, preparing materials, and training volunteers. S/he will recruit, train and supervise a team of community volunteers and mentors , and lead successful program activities that will assist in meeting program’s as well as client’s individual goals.

Essential Functions:(The tasks, duties, and responsibilities of the position that are most important to get the job done. The responsibilities should be listed in the order of importance, with the highest priority functions first.)

  1. Facilitate learning opportunities and guided discussion on culture and barriers specific to elderly refugees.
  2. Conduct assessment of elderly refugees to determine education needs beyond naturalization and incorporate topics into educational sessions.
  3. Prepare and instruct Citizenship/English literacy class when needed
  4. Educate refugee community on their right, benefit and obligations to adjust their status.
  5. Assures accurate and timely completion and submission of all required documentation and reports.
  6. Recruit, train and supervise volunteers to provide English Language Training classes focused on civic engagement and test answers
  7. Train and match mentors with elderly refugees. Help the mentor and the mentee develop goals and track the progress
  8. Engage in direct outreach and recruitment at community events as needed
  9. Establish good working relationship with local senior services providers in order to help elderly refugees with information, referral and advocacy when necessary
  10. Perform other duties as requested.

Education:BA / BS in related field.

Experience: 2-3 years of experience in a field with similar or overlapping skill set as program development, recruitment or volunteer management.Familiarity with the naturalization process and experience of newcomers is preferred.

Specific skills/abilities: Awareness and sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socio-economic characteristics is required. Exceptional organization and time management skills. High degree of volunteer based activities and community service.Excellent public relations skills and interpersonal communication skills are necessary, as is ability to work cooperatively with a wide range of organizations. Able to adhere to deadlines, react to unpredictable events quickly and efficiently, be resourceful, manage conflict and challenges well.

Specialized knowledge, licenses, etc:Knowledge of English Language Training (ELT), Civics and Citizenship Education.
