JOB DESCRIPTION – ARTS COORDINATOR

Grade:Band 6

Working Hours:22.5 hoursper week (Open to Job Share)

Job Purpose

This post holder is responsible for the development and coordination of arts activity within the hospice. Evidence suggests that the arts make a significant contribution to improving the lives, health and wellbeing of patients, service users and carers. Arts activity will focus on engaging with people needing hospice services, within the in-patients unit, people attending for day time appointments, and within our public spaces, the Community Hub, and Finding Space. As well as developing and coordinating activity, the post holder will work alongside our fundraising team to establish future funding to sustain arts activity in future years.

Background Statement

St. Joseph’s Hospice is a health care charity established in 1905 to offer help and support to people with progressive and life threatening conditions, their families and carers. It currently provides high quality palliative care to a significant and growing number of families living in East London and beyond. Our recent strategic priorities include the need to reach more people, and earlier in their illness, and to develop our day services based on what our community needs. The Hospice serves a highly diverse population with a variety of needs and preferences, which need to be respected and accommodated wherever possible in this setting.

Our facilities in the hospice include a welcoming reception and community hub, and a multi-functional facility called “Finding Space”, where people can access the range of medical symptom monitoring and advice, complementary therapies, social activities and group support, and referral into our other hospice services.

Responsibilities of the role

Arts Development

  • Agree an arts strategy for this role and a business plan incorporating a varied arts programme, and fundraising plan.
  • The outcomes of the plan to indicate timelines, responsibly for implementation, and targets for fundraising income.
  • Regularly report progress to line manager within supervision and provide written reports to the hospice management team.
  • Develop links with arts, educational and funding organisations to seek funding, align projects, and enhance the programme.
  • Establish and organise a biennial arts auction, seeking to raise funding for the arts in the hospice.
  • Liaise with the Fundraising department for marketing activities, and seek additional resources through fundraising.
  • Advise the organisation making recommendations for the allocation of secured funding to support arts development.
  • Advise the organisation making recommendations for the display of art and material within the hospice environment, and plan the display of arts within the exhibition space within the hub.
  • Identify areas for research as a basis for improving the service in the future, leading and participating where appropriate to analyse services, ensure improvements and evidence a highly effective service.
  • Represent the hospice at local and national level to promote innovative approaches to arts development.
  • Deliver education sessions within the hospice and externally to promote engagement with arts to support wellbeing and personal creativity within palliative care settings.

Service Delivery

  • Commission, initiate and manage arts programmes/ projects/ activities for the target groups in a wide range of genres.
  • The coordinator is responsible for the day to day provision arts activities, including the deployment of volunteers, facilities and resources to ensure a varied arts programme is available to people using our services.
  • Establish a programme arts activities and events within the community hub and finding space, so that patients attending the hospice for an appointment, or drop in visitors, or in-patients, are individually welcomed and can choose from a menu of options how to engage with the arts programme.
  • Ensure that the menu of events and activities takes into account and specifically caters for the range of diversity within the populations served by St Joseph’s Hospice.
  • Plan and implement new arts based projects, in partnership with internal or external colleagues.
  • Work with the volunteers team, day services andcomplementary therapiesteam to ensure that the role of volunteers used to provide art activities is well-defined, and delivered within a safe operating framework.
  • Recruit, induct and train volunteers to deliver the arts programme, managing capacity of the individuals to ensure access to the arts and that the programme is delivered consistently.
  • Observe arts volunteers team interacting with patients and families in the hospice, and monitor standards to promote engagement in wellbeing activities and best practise.
  • Identify areas of risk around health and safety of patients, staff and volunteers within the arts programme, and take steps to minimise risk.
  • Adhere to hospice policy and procedures, including reporting and investigating incidents

Personal development

  • Take responsibility for own personal development, including keeping up to date with relevant local and national developments.
  • Take responsibility for linking own development needs to the Hospice appraisal and objective setting process
  • Engage in supervision to support personal development
  • Deliver education sessions within the hospice and externally to promote engagement with arts to support wellbeing and personal creativity within palliative care settings.
