The Cliff

It was a well-known tourist destination. People from all over the world came to see the Canyon, with its steep cliffs and raging waters down below. If you went at just the right time, when the sun would shine just right, you could see rainbows dancing in the spray coming up from the water crashing against the jagged rocks at the bottom of the waterfall.

There was a high chain-link fence around the cliffs, but they weren’t looked after well. If one were to try, they could find a small hole in the bottom of the fence in a far corner. No one noticed the small hole. No one noticed the boy who crawled through the hole in the fence. No one noticed him as he stood on the very edge of the cliff, studying the rainbows dancing through the mist in the early morning light. No one ever noticed the boy.

No one noticed the boy- not until he was already falling, not until it was too late and he was lying lifelessly at the bottom of the cliffs, water rushing around him. No one knew that the boy meant for this to happen. Everyone in the small town believed it to be some freak mistake, that the boy was too transfixed by the rainbows and didn’t notice as he stepped off the edge. This was a common occurrence in the Canyon, that a tourist who didn’t know the area would step carelessly and find their grave in the relentless water below.

There were only two people in the town who knew the truth. They knew that the boy knew the area, they knew that he didn’t misstep. The first person who knew the truth was the boy’s father, the second was the boy’s boyfriend.

The boy’s father didn’t approve of the boy’s boyfriend. His father didn’t approve of the boy having a boyfriend at all. The boy’s father thought that he would rather not have a son at all than have a son who had a boyfriend. He had ignored his son when he was alive. The boy would come home from school and go straight up to his room. The man didn’t know his son at all. He hadn’t talked to him since he told him that he was gay. He couldn’t wait for the day that his son would move out and he wouldn’t have to look at his face anymore. He didn’t love his son.

He didn’t realize that he was wrong about that until the police showed up on his doorstep. He didn’t realize that his son was the only thing he had left after his wife had died. He realized all of the mistakes he had made as the police told him what had happened. He went numb as he realized that he would never be able to take the way that he had acted towards his son back. He was a broken man from that day on. His son was still his son, no matter who he loved. He loved his son.

No one noticed the small house. No one noticed the man who wandered aimlessly around the house at night. No one noticed him as he stood in his son’s old room, studying the dust dancing through the still air in the early morning light. No one ever noticed the man.

The man never noticed the boy- not until he was already broken, not until it was too late and his son was lying lifelessly at the bottom of the cliffs, water rushing around him. What the boy hadn’t known when he took his life was that he would be taking his father’s life as well.

The boy’s boyfriend was in love with the man’s son. He had believed that they would’ve been married one day. He was the only one who had noticed the boy while he was still alive. He and the boy would meet every day in the library after school. They would talk for hours upon hours. They knew everything about each other, all of their dreams, aspirations, and regrets. They knew everything, and yet he had never noticed just how broken the boy was inside, not until it was too late.

The boy was always good at hiding his inner turmoil from all onlookers. He hadn’t wanted anyone to worry about him, to pry too hard and unleash all of his inner demons. He didn’t want to be a burden. His boyfriend wouldn’t have minded, in fact he would’ve been happy to help the boy bear the pain that was his life. But the boy hadn’t known that.

No one noticed the small hole. No one noticed the boyfriend when he crawled through the hole in the fence. No one noticed him as he stood on the very edge of the cliff, studying the rainbows dancing through the mist in the early morning light. No one ever noticed the boyfriend.

No one noticed the boyfriend- even though he would visit the cliff every day to leave flowers and sit in the spot where the love of his life had taken his life. What the boy hadn’t known when he took his life was that he would be taking his boyfriend’s life as well.
