Mid-Atlantic Addiction Technology Transfer Center is pleased to announce its free training on buprenorphinetreatment.The training isfocused on understanding buprenorphine as a medication assisted treatment, its research base andhow it can augment traditional treatment.

Description: The training is designed to provide a broad overview of the medication, its effects, and the role of non-physician practitioners in providing and supporting the treatment of individuals receiving this medication. A goal is to assist the substance abuse and mental health practitioner in deepening their understandingof the use of buprenorphine. The material for this coursewas developed by NIDA and SAMHSA. It is important to note that this training is introductory and is focused on building awareness and encouraging multidisciplinary addiction professionals to learn more about buprenorphine and its role in opioid treatment. It is NOT designed to provide an expert level of competency in utilizing buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid addiction.

Target Audience: Substance abuse and mental health treatment providers (e.g., counselors, case managers, administrators, peer counselors, and nurses)

Continuing Education: Six contact hours are available. Approved by NAADAC, NBCC, ICRC and Kentucky Board of Social Work.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the history of opioid treatment in the United States.
  • Understand changes in the laws regarding treatment of opioid addiction and the implications for the treatment system.
  • Identify groups of people who are using opioids.
  • Understand counseling techniques for working with individuals prescribed buprenorphine for opioid treatment

Trainer: Susan Coyer, MA, CCAC-S, MAC, CCJP, LSW is the Clinical Supervisor of Prestera’s Addictions Recovery Center, West. She has over 20 years experience in addictions treatment and holds a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling with an emphasis in addictions from Marshall University Graduate College. She is a Certified Addictions Counselor, Certified Clinical Supervisor, Master Addiction Counselor, Certified Criminal Justice Professional, Licensed Social Worker and Qualified Substance Abuse Professional. Susan has experience working in detox, residential, outpatient and community housing programs with adult substance abusers. She is the immediate past president the West Virginia Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors, Inc. and served on the board of directors of NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals. She is currently serving on the National Certification Commission.
