Exodus 39:32-40:38: Time for Praise and Reflection

Dedications of new churches are special. Such services evoke pride and appreciation. But with every privilege and blessing from God comes new responsibilities. Our church buildings, in a sense, call us to faithful worship, witness and obedience to God's will. Although God's glory may not be visible, it is present in our hearts. Join with Moses and the Israelites in this study and celebrate God's goodness to them and to us.

Warming Up to God

What have you learned about God through these quiet times in Exodus? Reflect on the ways you've grown and thank God for molding you in the image of his Son.

Discovering the Word

  1. What feelings do you think the Israelites had in working "just as the Lord had commanded" and in showing their work to Moses?
  2. Why was it necessary to anoint everything, to burn incense and make offerings (40:9-10, 26-29)?
  3. Buildings and furnishings today are not holy, as the tabernacle and its furnishings were. What are the components of God's dwelling place today (Eph 2:19-22)?
  4. How did God reveal his presence (40:34-38)?

Applying the Word

  1. As you invest your life for God, what satisfaction have you gained from following his plan?
  2. In what circumstances have you especially felt God's presence?
  3. How does God reveal his glory and presence in our midst today?

Responding in Prayer

Thank God for the ways he has used the stories of Exodus to strengthen you and draw you closer to himself.

For further consideration:

ID: Inductive Questions (Asking the text questions like who, what, where, when, why, & how?”)

CR: Cross References (Comparing Scripture to Scripture, understanding the vague by the clear.)

WS: Word Study (Understanding definition, theological meaning, and usages in other passages.)

IF you did not discuss this passage with lesson 23, it might be worth looking at.

CR (39:30) Hebrews 9:1-15 relates the Old Testament worship in the Tabernacle (and later the Temple) to Christ’s work in Heaven. Read through that passage and write down some observations about the relationship between The Tabernacle worship, Christ’s work in Heaven, and our New Testament worship.

CR Can you think of New Testament references to these items from The Tabernacle.

  • Ark of the Testimony (Covenant) (Heb 9:3-5; Revelation11:19))
  • Mercy Seat (Hebrews 9:3-5)
  • Veil (Matthew 27:50-51; Hebrews 10:19-22)
  • Table of the Bread of the Presence (Mark 2:25-26; 1 Corinthians 10:21-22?)
  • Lampstand (Hebrews 9:3-5)
  • Gold Altar (of Incense) (Hebrews 9:3-5: Revelation 8:4-6; 9:13)
  • Laver (washing?)
  • Bronze Altar of Burnt Offerings (Revelations 16:5-7?)

Has your impressions of Exodus changed during this study? Is there something that you were not expecting?

Can you think of a key truth, verse, or application that you have taken from the study of Exodus? Is there anything in your life that you are working to change because of something in Exodus?
