About Lijiang.
OldCity of Lijiang – The Object of World Cultural Heritage
TheOldCityofLijiangwasbuilt approximatelyinlastperiodsofSongDynastyandfirstyearsof Yuan Dynasty. Itiswellpreservedandembodiesoutstanding skill of Naxi people and unique architectural style of South-West China. Inthe 8thofDecember 1986theStateCouncildeclaredthe Old City of Lijiang as one of Chinese “Historical Cities of Great Cultural Value”, and in 1997 Lijiang obtained a status of Object of UNESCO World Natural Heritage.
Occupyingaterritoryof 3.8 square kilometers OldCity doesn’t copy a usual sample of quadrant street grid and not surrounded by high walls as in other typical Chinese cities. Quitethecontrary, itextendsinalldirections. Thecityishedgedbyhighmountainsfromthreesidesanddividedbythreerapid channels, creating so far magnificent scenery. Tranquilandflexible “waterveins” ofthisancientCitycreate a very romantic and vivid landscape with the unique architecture of Naxi near picturesque mountains on the background
Reputation of the City and recent efforts by restoration of Naxi Culture made the Old City of Lijiang more well-known for the world, especially for its amazing ability to survive through the ages of social challenges and natural destruction. Andinagreementofconsideringofitsuniquehistoryandtoday’sprosperity Old City of Lijiang has been included by international Tourism Organization in the list of the “100 Cities of the World, Which are Worth Visiting”.
