Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the following passages taken from your classmates’ responses.

Edit the responses when necessary to ensure that all quotations are properly blended and cited.

1.  I would name chapter 2, Miss Caroline, simply for the fact that most of the chapter is spent in the classroom and the one scene where Scout gets rulers to the hand, stood out in my mind and for that, I would call the chapter Miss Caroline. “As I was the last to leave, I saw her sink down into her chair and bury her head in her arms. Had her conduct been more friendly toward me, I would have felt sorry for her. She was a pretty little thing” (29).

2.  "If Atticus ever said we couldn't, Jem had thought of a way around it", (Lee, 55). To me, this quote means that Jem is obviously more of a trickster. He appears to be the leader and brains of the group and Dill and Scout just kind of follow behind.

3.  This chapter should be titled Defiance. This chapter is really one of the more dangerous chapters of the book and it shows the realities of the situation with Tom Robinson. I would title it defiance because it is really one of the first times that Jem doesn't listen to Atticus's instructions and instead does what he thinks is right. Atticus told Jem and the kids to go home once they made themselves known and Scout states "We were always accustomed to prompt, if not always cheerful acquiescence to Atticus's instructions, but from the way he stood Jem was not thinking of budging" (152). This really shows Jem starting to grow up. Atticus was clearly in trouble because a clan of men had showed up to kill Tom Robinson whom he was protecting.

4.  Miss Maudie, a nice neighbor of Scout and Jem, sees reality how it is and states, "'Arthur Radely just stays in the house, that's all'"(Lee 58). In this conversation with Scout, Miss Maudie gives Arthur the respect he deserves and the justice by calling him by his normal name and stating a simple reason for why he doesn't come out.

5.  A mockingbird is a symbol of innocence in this book, they do not do anything to people they simply sing for the enjoyment of people. Atticus, one of the main characters of the book is portrayed as a mockingbird because he is a good person who teaches his children not to be prejudice or judge people who are different. Also gives Scout good advice when he says, "You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't you let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change . . . it's a good one, even if it does resist learning"( 101). He tells her to do what’s right and not to ever back down but later on shows her the reality of the world.
