Wildlife

Many people think that London hasn't got any wildlife because it's abig city. Well, that isn't true. There are 14 species of bat in the UK, andyou can find 9 of them in London - along the River Thames, flyingthrough parks, and living in holes in old trees. Bats fly at night becausethey have a special ability-they use radar. This means they navigatemore efficiently in the dark than other animals.

Foxes are also very common in London. They look like small, brown dogs, but they canhear better than any dog. They can hear the sound of an earthworm moving under the soil.Earthworms and small animals are their main food. Foxes can see better in the dark thanmost other animals - their eyes are specially adapted - so you usually see them in theevening or at night.

Sharks live in all parts of the world. There are 250 differentsharks. All sharks eat meat. The white shark isn't very nice. It is very big - 6 metres long. It eats fish, small sharks, seals and people! It swimsvery fast - 65 kilometres an hour. People only swim 6 kilometresan hour.A remora is a small fish - only 45 centimetres long. Itlives on a shark. It eats food from the shark and swims withthe shark.

Ostriches are birds. They come from Africa and Australia. They are black and white. They are verybig. They can run very fast - 60 kilometres per hour.

They can't fly. An ostrich nest isn't in a tree. It's inthe ground. A female ostrich sits on 10 to 20 eggs.Flamingos'come from many countries. They arepink. They have long legs. They live near salt water. They eat fish and they can fly. Their nests are nearwater. They are on the ground. A female flamingo sits on two eggs.

Tortoises come from warm countries - Spain, Greece, Italy,North Africa, Australia - but they can live in cold countries. Manytortoises live in gardens in Great Britain and North America. When it is cold they sleep for 20-24 weeks.Big tortoises can live for 150 years. Small tortoises can live for50 or 60 years.
