Obituary:
John T. Barkley was born in Rutherford County Tennessee December 3, 1833. Died in Paducah, Ky., August 29, 1925, near 92 years old. His first and second wife and children have all passed away long ago except for two sons, John F. Barkley and William R. Barkley of Paducah Ky. His home has been in Yorkville and Dyer since 1866. Brother Barkley joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Yorkville in 1869 and had been a member of that church ever since. He was made an Odd Fellow before he moved to Gibson County and was a member at the time of his death.

In 1862 Uncle John went into the Confederate Army with his company near Murfessboro, Tenn., under Col. Quincy Spain. This company was in Gen. Bedford Forest's cavalry and moved rapidly over the country from Tennessee to southern Mississippi and was in many engagements with the enemy. In 1863 Gen Forest sent through the Federal lines Uncle John and two other Confederate soldiers to secure clothing for his men. The order was successfully carried out and the three soldiers got back to their comand under fire which lasted several days in the mountains near Chattanooga. At the Battle of Hattisburg, Miss., July 3-4 1864, Uncle John fell from his horse while the column was moving rapidly. He came to himself and was able to keep up with his company but was not very well for some time. When Gen. Forest was ordered to raid later in the year, Uncle John did his best to follow him. As Nashville was too strong the raid was diverted to Murfeesboro, where some fierce fighting was done. But a slow typhoid fever had been on Uncle John till he became so exhausted that he was left there to recuperate under Dr. Bilbro a retired place near Milton, Tennessee. He was restored to health after a long seige which carried him over into the spring of 1965 and ended his career.
Uncle John had a good line of ancestors. His father name was Andrew Barkley and his mother's maiden name was Hannah Walker. His grandfathers name was John Barkley who was a Revolutionary soldier and his grandmother's maiden name was Jane Knox. His great grandfather was Thomas Barkley, a Scotch-Irishman who landed in Charleston, S.C., after the war had commenced, in time to put his sons, John and James into the American Army in Salisbury, N.C. Both served till the Revolution ended, when John and James moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee.
Goodbye Uncle John

  • I believe I can give you a little help in you search. During the search of Barkleys in Al. got as far as George Barkley b. Rowan Co. N.C. father unknown. Went to said county and the Barkleys have an organization and have researched and documented from Henry Barkley married to Mary and settled near the present city of Salisbury, N.C. around 1740. Henry and Mary were charter members of Thyatira Presb. Church. They had six children...... two sons moved to Tn. and married Knoxs and they don't have any other information other than the names of James and John, the sons that moved. This sounds like a link you are looking for. I got this information from Linda B. Hoyle, 628 Hoyle Street, Lincolnton, .C. 28092 She was president of the Robert Barkley Historical Assn. and should be able to help you. Good Luck.

  • Jan,
Thank You for your Interest in this line, but if you see my post #512 you'll notice that I was already aware of who James & John BARKLEY's parents were.
I'm a direct descendant of James BARKLEY who married Sarah KNOX.
Since my James BARKLEY had no sons to live to adulthood and therefore the BARKLEY name was not carried on from his line, I took the task of researching his brother John's family line in Rutherford Co.,TN. as a sort of tribute to my James BARKLEY.

  • Thank you so much for your quick response. I had not seen your post #512 until after I had already posted to you...... sorry. Do you happen to know if John had male descendants and if so, would you please share that with me. I have found there is much misinformation concerning the George Barkley that I have researched. I have no idea who his parents were but according to the cencus he was born in N.C. Dec., 1799 in Anson or Rowan N.C. Married Liddia White 9/1821 also born in Anson or Rowan N.C. 8/1792. Thank you for any assistance you may give. Jan Barkley Fry.
