Huxley Building - Generic Emergency and Egress Plan

The event organiser/hirer/facilitator will need to provide the individual with a copy of the GEEP and discuss the following with them as well as inform the university site caretakers.

There are emergency telephones in the refuge areas.

NB: the designated safe refuge areas are stair/lift lobbies of staircase 1 and 3. Refuges are provided with Emergency Voice Communications linked to the BEC or nominated person.

When the fire alarm sounds the event organiser/hirer/facilitator will act as your “buddy “or you can ask a friend/colleague to assist the individual to the nearest refuge

In the unlikely event the building must be evacuated

  • A trained person will come to your floor in the evacuation lift and assist you from the building.

In the event of the lift not working

  • If you are unable to use the stairs trained personnel will come to the refuge to assist you from the building using an “evac” chair.
  • If you are able to use the stairs or on the ground floor you may make your way from the building with the assistance of your buddy at your own pace.

If you do not have a buddy

  • And you are in the refuge a fire warden (FW) will remain with you once they have checked their area

If there is no response from the emergency telephone or you can’t make contact with BEC

  • If there is no reply then ring the emergency number 01273642222 and explain where you are, your situation and location. The BEC will then make contact or send a runner.

All persons involved in this GEEP must familiarize themselves with the locations of the fire exits and the disabled refuges.

Persons unable to use the stairs i.e. impaired mobility due to disability, are required to stay at a designated safe refuge area, follow instructions posted at each refuge area and await assistance
