Honors Unit 7 Study Guide– Bonding & Molecular Geo

  • Test on Wednesday, March 16th
  • 68 total points – will be scaled out of 100 pointslike other unit tests
  • Section 1: Multiple Choice – 20 questions (2 pts. each – 40 pts. total)
  • Section 2: Covalent Lewis Structures & Molecular Geometry – 5 questions (25 pts.)
  • Draw Lewis structures for covalent compounds & identify their molecular geometry
  • Section 3: Resonance Structures – 1 question (3 pts.)

Breakdown of Topics:

Bonding

  • Know the difference between an ionic bond and a covalent bond
  • Understand the Octet Rule and why atoms generally follow it

Lewis Structures for COVALENT COMPOUNDS

  • Draw an accurate Lewis structure for a covalent compound
  • Including exceptions to the Octet Rule: reduced octets, expanded octets
  • Understand the concept of “resonance” and how to draw resonance structures for a compound

Molecular Geometry

  • Define “VSEPR Theory” and understand how it predicts the shape of a molecule
  • MEMORIZE the molecular geometry name, shape, & bond angle for all compounds that follow the octet rule (i.e. 2, 3, & 4 total attachments – linear, trigonal planar, bent, tetrahedral, trigonal pyramid, and bent)
  • Expanded octets such as the trigonal pyramid, see-saw, T-shaped, linear, octahedral, square pyramid, and square planar geometries are in the reference book – TAKE A LOOK!!
  • Determine the molecular geometry for a molecule based on its Lewis structure

Polarity

  • Understand the difference between a “polar” covalent bond & a “non-polar” covalent bond

Understand the difference between a “polar” molecule & a “non-polar” molecule

  • Predict the type of bond between two elements based on differences in electronegativity (or the types of atoms bonded)
  • Table of Electronegativity values located in your reference book!
  • Determine whether a molecule is polar or non-polar based on it’s Lewis structure & molecular geometry

Hybridization

  • Based on the number of attachments to the central atom in a molecule, determine the hybridization around the central atom
  • Linear (AX2) = sp
  • Trigonal Planar, Bent (AX2E) = sp2
  • Tetrahedral, Trigonal Pyramid, Bent (AX2E2) = sp3
  • Trigonal Bipyramid, See-saw, T-Shaped, Linear (AX2E3) = sp3d
  • Octahedral, Square Pyramid, Square Planar = sp3d2
