FAQ’s

What is included in the renovation? This is a comprehensive renovation of the entire high school. It will be completed in four phases. Seven to 12 classrooms will be renovated during each phase to minimize disruption. The science wing expansion will begin during phase 2 and will be complete in phase 4.

Phase 1 -- Includes the administration area, guidance offices, building entrance, art classrooms, most of the parking lot and driveways, and 12 core classrooms. The geothermal wells will also be installed during this phase, and the new gymnasium, and music/theater addition will be built.

Phase 2 – Includes auditorium, stage, auditorium lobby, greenhouse, existing music area, wrestling room, and seven classrooms. In addition, five new classrooms, plus the cardio fitness room, and weight room, will be constructed in the existing gym.

Phase 3 – Includes the woodshop, kitchen, cafeteria, attendance office, Dean of Student’s office, classrooms, and the locker room area.

Phase 4 – The remaining classrooms, library, computer lab, and locker area will be renovated, and the former boiler room will become a garage and storage area.

How much of the building will be new? 22,150 square feet will be added to the existing building making it a 217,650 square foot high school. The new additions include an expanded music wing and a new theater/fine arts room, a gymnasium, a greenhouse, and the addition of a second floor in the existing gymnasium that will house six new classrooms.

Why are more classrooms needed? Since the building was constructed in 1969, there have been many changes to the district’s educational program. Some changes were a result of state and federal mandates and others were necessary to maintain a competitive academic program. Additional and larger classrooms were needed to meet special education laws, advanced placement classes were added to the curriculum, andexisting classrooms were converted into computer labs.Things continue to change. Nationally, more emphasis is being placed on the sciences, and in the HASD participation in the arts has increased significantly.

What is the cost to build the new gymnasium? $3.2 million or 10% of the construction cost

Why not renovate the existing gym? The board looked at the entire project and carefully considered the various options and the costs associated with each. Renovating the existing gym and bringing it up to code would have resulted in a gymnasium with 25% less seating capacity and it still would have been necessary to build an addition for six classrooms and a weight room. In the end, it cost less than 1% more to build a new gymnasium (rather than renovate the old) and to create two floors in the existing gym to house thenew classrooms.

When will the project be complete? The projected completion date is February 2011
