January Knowledge from the Classroom…..

Hello everyone!
This past month, the Kindergartens have been getting a lot of work done! The students have been working on phonological awareness by blending syllables, segmenting words and identifying the initial or final sound in a word. For phonics, the students have completed letters M, T, P, K, S, and F. In printing class, the students have been working on their first and last names, numbers, and letters. As well, the students have been listening to stories. They enjoy sharing their favourite parts in a story and identifying how the stories are sometimes similar and how they can be different. In Math, the students have been working on counting to 20, recognizing numbers to 20, and ordering numbers to 20.

The Grade 1 students have been busy learning rules to help them with their reading and spelling. The students are currently reading books that focus on the long vowel sound. For phonics, the students are working on consonant diagraphs. In Math, they have just completed a Measurement unit using comparisons (more/less, greatest/least, tallest/shortest).
The students are eager to see what they will learn next!

When we came back from our Christmas break, the students settled into the routine nicely and this month has been busy. In Math, the grade 2’s are continuing to work on addition and subtraction to 100. We are learning strategies to add, like using doubles and making 10. The grade 3’s are flying through their work on addition and subtraction to 1000. We are learning about carrying in addition and borrowing in subtraction. In Science, we are enjoying lessons and demonstrations on Senses (grades 1-2) and Magnetism and Static Electricity (grade 3). Thank you for continuing to send in the weekly reading comprehension pages.

Mr. Chambers

It has been a busy month in Room 2! We started out with a big change- we had to say goodbye to Ms. Hill. Even though we will miss her, we wish her all the best at her new job! We’re wrapping up our Light and Electricity Units, and will be moving onto Rocks and Minerals (Grade 4/5) and Our Solar System (Grade 6’s). We are looking forward to collaborating with Rossville and Harris-Tessier schools to complete our Solar System Unit! In Math grade 6’s are working Understanding Numbers (Prime Numbers, Multiples, Order of Operations), Grade 5’s are working on Multiplying and Dividing Whole Numbers, and Grade 4’s have are on Multiplication and Division. A big thank you to the parents for your support in the sending home of more reading/writing/math practice!

If parents have not yet signed up for Room 2’s Remind 101 class, please remember to do so- please don’t hesitate to contact Ms. Moser if you’re having trouble!

Have a wonderful month!

Ms. Moser

Thanks,

Jason Chambers
