Headington Dog Training School

Hello and welcome to Fair Weather Dog Training Classes at Arncott Village Hall, Arncott, Bicester.

Your Instructor is:

  • Mrs Jennie Fairweather ADTP.

The aim of FairWeatherDogTraining School is to teach you to train your dog to be a happy, obedient and sociable pet. He/she will learn various exercises which are so designed as to enable you to bring your dogunder your control.Using kind and gentle methods,we will show you how to: examine your dog, get your dog to walk beside you on a loose lead, to be able to get them to sit, down and stand on command, to be able to stay in one place for up to 2 minutes in any position. We will show you how to get your dog to come back to you when you call them and they will be socialised with other dogs and strangers. We will teach you Clicker Training to help you achieve all these things.

The club is a Listed club for The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme and training is based on this scheme.

This club has 3 classes:

  • The PuppyFoundationAssessmentfor puppies that can socialise with other dogs to those aged less than 5 months. The class starts at 6:45 pm and ends at 7:30pm. It runs for 10 weeks.
  • The basic training class is for dogs over 5 months of age. It runs for 10 weeks. The starting time for this class is 7:30pm and finishes at 8:15pm. In this class, we worktowards the Kennel Club Good Citizen BronzeAward.
  • The Intermediate/Advanced class is for those dogs who have achieved the KC Bronze Award. Starting time for this class is at8:15pm, and finishes at 9:00pm. Training continues to a higher standard, plus aiming for the Kennel Club Good Citizen Silver and Gold Awards. In this class we also teach your dog how to retrieve, send away, sent discrimination, etc.

For both of these two courses, training consists of:

Weeks 1-8 will be training,

Week 9 will be a short club test

Week 10 (or as soon as possible after)will be the Kennel Club Good Citizen Award test.

Please do not feed your dog before they come to class as many dogs become excited, especially young ones, and they may be sick, ‘spend a penny’, or even worse. If you cannotbear to make him wait for his supper, a lightmeal (1/4 measure) at midday could be given. However, during training classes they will get lots of treats so they will not be hungry.

Shoulda little accident happen, it is yourresponsibility to ‘mop up’. Equipment anddisinfectantare provided so,please don’t be embarrassed,as it has happened to us all. Walk your dog beforethey cometo classes. Should you need to take them outsidewhilst here, please DO NOT allow themto soilanywhere a child might play. There is a Dog litter bin behind the bus shelter or take it home.

Your dog will be happier and more responsive if youtrain in soft shoes or trainers. High heels and noisyshoes are not advisable: handlers (and dogs) needto hear the instructions given by the Trainer, sogive your dog (and neighbour) a chance. High heelsmayalso make your dog want to ‘keep his distance’.Ladiesmay prefer to wear trousers or jeans as skirts mayflap about the dogs head.

Apocket that is easily accessable is essential,

’titbitsare USELESS if you need to get them fromthe a chair, windowsill, or someone else! If your doghas to waitfor its reward, the whole point of the exerciseislost.

DO NOT let your puppy or dog get too close totheirneighbour. Remember that although you knowyourown dog, you are not familiar with the otherdogsand it might be unfriendly! Your dog is yourresponsibility and you must watch him at all times.

If you dog is coughing, has a sore throat, has anupset tummy or has had an operation pleaseDO NOT bring him/her to club. Let them recoverat home.

If your bitch is in season/heat, please leave her at home until she has finished. You can still attend the classes without her.

Children accompanying adults to trainingsessionsmust be kept under control at all times.

Children are welcome to train their dogsbut mustbe accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.

Should you have any questions we shall be pleasedtoanswer them so do ask even if you think it is asillyquestion because if you have thought it, thensomeoneis probably of the same mind. Finally, this should be a happy and social occasion for youandyour dog, enjoy it and your dog will too.
