Course Description: This course will focus on American History and geography from the Discovery and Settlement era to contemporary issues in the 20th century. It is a semester long class that will satisfy .5 of the three required social studies credits that are needed for graduation. This course will focus on the following themes that helped to impact, change, and shape the country live in now. This course is designed to provide students with analytical skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the subject of American History. This course will also train students to analyze and interpret primary sources, including documentary material, maps, statistical tables, and pictorial and graphic evidence of historical events. Study will be based upon the Mesa district curriculum and basic skills proposed by the State of Arizona.

Materials Required

* Course Text: American Anthem. Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 2007. Provided by the teacher.

Each student will be issued a textbook.

* A 3-ring binder should be used for class notes and assignments. Students are responsible for maintaining all of their assignments and instructions in an organized manner.

* All assignments will be completed in blue or black pen or pencil only.

* Other resources will be provided by the teacher.

School & Class Policies

It is expected that STUDENTS WILL COMPLY WITH ALL SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES.

  • To pass this class, you must be present (10 absences = AUDIT=NO CREDIT)
  • Please be on time to class. Tardiness = Lack of Respect. 3rd tardy= 30 min. detention, CONTINUED TARDIES WILL RESULT IN AN ADMINISTRATIVE REFERRALPOSSIBLE SATURDAY SCHOOL.
  • Class is over when I dismiss you. You are not allowed out of your seats until I give direction. Packing up prior to the end of class will result in that/those students exiting the room last.
  • Students who miss class have the number of days missed to make up class work. Your absence needs to be excused through the office in order to get credit for make-up work. You can’t decide to skip class and still receive credit for missed work.
  • Any work missed due to an excused absence must be made up upon returning to class, unless the student has contacted the teacher and special arrangements have been made.
  • No passes will be issued during the first and last 15 minutes of class. The teacher will issue passes only in emergencies.
  • The following items are not permitted in my class: food, drink, cell phones, mp3 players or any other electronic devices. If these items become a distraction in my class, they will be confiscated and given to the office.
  • Work is due on the day it is assigned in class. LATE WORK MAY BE ACCEPTED UP TO TEN SCHOOL DAYS AFTER THE ASSIGNED DEADLINE WITH TEACHER APPROVAL. LATE WORK WILL RECEIVE ONLY 50% OF THE TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS. Make sure to turn in all work on the ACTUAL DAY IT IS DUE!!

Requirements:

-Come to class on time every day. - Bring all materials to class every day.

-Participate in all class activities. - Come ready to learn a new item each day.

Grades: will be awarded by assessing the following items:

-Tests – Will occur at the end of most major units of study. They will consist of fill-in-the-blank, essay, multiple choice, or true/false questions.

-Quizzes – Will be given during a unit of study to assess your understanding of the material under study. Quizzes may be given at the beginning or end of the class hour. Students arriving to class late after a quiz has begun, will not be permitted to take the quiz and will have to schedule a make-up.

-Homework Assignments – Homework will be given periodically, and will be assigned to provide for practice, enrichment, remediation, or to prepare for upcoming tests.

-Projects – Points will be given for both group and individual projects.

-Participation Points – You will be told when you will be graded for participation points.

-Final Assessment – This is the last grade to assess your knowledge of materials presented in

this course.

-Extra Credit – There are many issues that are relevant to class content. Select an issue that relates to our class content and write an essay (1-2 pages). You must provide citation or a copy of the relevant article, etc., that you used to base your essay on. Extra credit points may also be given at the end of tests or quizzes. See me for specific instructions. * You may only receive up to 20 points per 9 weeks.

-Grade Scale

A = 90 – 100 B = 80 – 89 C = 70 – 79 D= 60 – 69F = 59 & lower

  • Each assignment, quiz, test, project, or activity will be assigned point values. A grade of zero will be assigned if a student is unexcused from class or there is evidence of cheating. If an assignment is turned in without the students’ name, the assignment will be discarded. Assignments will be given point values, and then converted to percentages to reach final grades.
  • There will be a total of four grades accumulated for this class:

-First 9 weeksSecond 9 weeksFinal Exam

-All three point totals will be accumulated to equal your final semester grade.
