Graduate Assistant Position Description

Office of Campus Life - Diversity Programs

Terms of Employment and Compensation:This position requires 20 hours per week and will be appointed annually.

Period of Obligation: Monday, August 15, 2016 through Friday, May 12, 2017.

Compensation (valued at approximately $11,000.00 annually) includes:

  • Single bedroom (in three person suite, with kitchenette and bathroom)
  • Partial meal plan: $350.00 Flex Points per semester
  • On-campus parking

Work schedule will be determined with individual supervisor; some evening and weekend hours may be required. NJIT observes the following holidays and will be closed:

Labor Day / Monday, September 5, 2016
Thanksgiving Break / Thursday, November 24 & Friday, November 25, 2016
Christmas Day / Sunday, December 25, 2016
New Year’s Day / Sunday, January 1, 2017
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day / Monday, January 16, 2017
Good Friday / Friday, April 14, 2017

In addition to holidays listed above, Graduate Assistants will receive the following times off:

Winter Break / Wednesday, December 21 – Wednesday, January 4, 2017
Spring Break / Monday, March 12 – Friday, March 19, 2017

General Qualifications: Candidates will need to be accepted and enrolled full time in a graduate program at an area university/college(e.g., Higher Education Administration; Student Affairs; Counseling; or other related field preferred); must demonstrate leadership, community development and administrative skills; remain in good academic and behavioral standing; will demonstrate evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills; strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and to conduct oneself in a highly professional and ethical manner, with a strong focus on customer service and student support; and will have a working knowledge of standard office technology (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

Office Information/Mission:

The mission of Diversity Programs within Campus Life is to initiate and support activities that promote cultural competency among students of the NJIT Community. We are committed to raising self-awareness, mutual understanding, and respect for others. As an office, we utilize Pamela Hays (1996, 2008) ADDRESSING Model to incorporate various identities in the work that we do. Further, our programs guide students through 3 stages of development: Awareness, Knowledge and Skills to help increase students understanding of issues and foster students potential to act on addressing issues through social justice.

Job Description:

The graduate student will work for Campus Life and specifically report to the Assistant Director for Leadership & Diversity Programs. The roles of the student include program planning, student club advisement, training and supervision. This person is to work among student workers and assist in producingdiversity and leadershipdevelopment opportunities for the NJIT community. This person should be comfortable with mentorship, public speaking, and program planning.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Peer to Peer Dialogue Series
  • Assist with DiversiTEA which is a peer to peer dialogue series
  • Partner with university on Day of Dialogue Initiatives
  • Women’s Leadership Development Program
  • In conjunction with Assistant Director, responsible to develop a curriculum to develop a women’s leadership development program.
  • Train & supervise the student staff thatwill assist with the program.
  • Develop workshop content
  • Facilitate workshops
  • Assess program
  • LGBQT Resource Development
  • In conjunction with Assistant Director, develop initiatives and resources to support the LGBTQ population. Specifically:
  • Research professional development opportunities
  • Build an online resource website
  • Collaborate with SPECTRUM
  • Develop curriculum to offer Safe Space Training
  • Diversity Trainings/Workshops
  • Assist with presenting workshops to student groups, as requested.
  • Assist with planning heritage, cultural, and identity months, including
  • Hispanic Heritage Month
  • Black History Month
  • Women’s History Month
  • Diversity Week
  • One World Week
  • Assist with spring recruitment and hiring for Student Employees, including but not limited to:(Spring semester Only)
  • Application Screening
  • Conducting Interviews
  • Candidate Selection
  • Assessment projects as requested by supervisor
  • Attend all staff meetings, and 1:1 supervision with direct supervisor.
  • Maintenance of Office & Office Supplies
  • Other duties as assigned.
