Gofyn Cwestiynau Asking Questions

GOFYN CWESTIYNAU – ASKING QUESTIONS

NOTES FOR UNIT 1 to 12

General guidelines

Suggestions for using the Drill Resources are given under each unit below, but here are some general guidelines.

  • There are ideas for Stimuli for each Adnodd Drilio (Drill Resource) and Tasg (Task) - see the separate file.
  • Before using the Drill Resources and Tasks, the pattern and the vocab should be learnt or revised. There is vocabularylinked to each Drill Resource and Task for use with the class and separate translations of all the vocabulary used in the resource.
  • A lot of help as regards vocabulary-learning techniques can be found on the web. One of those suggested is creating a 'story' using the vocabulary. For example, with the vocabulary of Appearance (Pryd a Gwedd), one could create a story where someone sees different people who have ... gwallt hir, llygaid glas and so on.
  • The Adnoddau Drilio (Drill Resources) are deliberately open-ended, i.e. they can be used many times to practise different questions on the same subject – e.g. different persons of the verb - Wyt ti’n hoffi ...? / Ydy e/hi’n hoffi ...?
  • The Tasgau (Tasks) include Drag and drop, Typing a sentence with a written stimulus' - i.e. choosing between two or three words and Typing a sentence with a picture stimulus. On the whole, the Drag and drop are the easiest, so these could be an useful place to start. There are translations available of all the tasks. The following tasks in the revision units (Unit 7 and Unit 12) are also in pdf form so they can be printed for learners to complete on paper: Unit 7, Tasks 17, 18, 19; Unit 12, Tasks 32, 33.
  • When using the Adnoddau Drilio (Drill Resources), it's possible to have fun by dividing the class into teams to compete against each other - possibilities are given in the units below.
  • Although the emphasis is on asking questions, this doesn't mean that learners cannot give answers as well.
  • After using the resources for each unit, time should be allowed for learners to ask each other and the teacher ‘authentic’ questions using the same pattern.

Unit 1

Ga i? / Oes?

Question / Activities / Theme
Grammar and Introduction Notes
Ga i? (May I?) / Drill Resource 1
Finding 'Cei' behind 'class vocabulary' pictues.
There are 5 'Cei' to find. Teams compete against each other, asking the question in order to reveal 'Cei'/'Na chei' / Occasional language
Attention needs to be drawn to the soft mutation following 'Ga i...?' e.g. Ga i fenthyg ...?
The mutation can be avoided by putting the direct articule (y/'r/yr = the) before the noun: e.g. 'Ga i'r llyfr?' (Can I have the book) instead of 'Ga i lyfr' (Can I have a book)
As is the case with all Drill Resources, the relevant vocabulary should be introduced before using the Drill Resource.
Ga i?(May I?) / Task 1
Drag and Drop Activity / Occasional language
Drag and drop activity to reinforce the work of Adnodd Drilio 1. (Drill Resource 1.
Oes?
Choose the pattern to be drilled from the ones below e.g. during one session, 'ti' could be concentrated on, and other sessions could concentrate on different persons. See translation below:
South Wales: ‘Oes ci gyda ti/Sam/fe/hi/ni/chi/nhw?’
North Wales: ‘Oes gen ti/gan Sam/ganddo fo/ganddi hi/gennyn ni/gennych chi/ganddyn nhw gi?’
(Do you/Sam/they / we
Does he/she have a dog?) / Drill Resource 2
One can 'Dewis a Dethol' (Select) individual items to be drilled - e.g. 6 items only. / Family and Pets
In north Wales, the soft mutation after: Oes gen ti/ganddo fo/gennyn ni...? etc. needs to be remembered Oes gen ti gi?
The relevant vocabulary should be introduced before using the Drill Resource.
Oes?
Choose the pattern to be drilled from the ones below e.g. during one session, 'ti' could be concentrated on, and other sessions could look at different persons. See translation below.
South Wales: ‘Oes llygaid glas gyda ti/Sam/fe/hi/ni/chi/nhw?’
North Wales: ‘Oes gen ti/gan Sam/ganddo fo/ganddi hi/gennyn ni/gennych chi/ganddyn nhw lygaid glas?’
(Do you/Sam/they / we
Does he/she have blue eyes?) / Drill Resource 3
Spinner (pictures appear in random order) / Appearance
In north Wales, the soft mutation after: Oes gen ti/ganddo fo/gennyn ni...? etc. needs to be remembered Oes ganddo fo lygaid glas?
Use the pictures as a stimulus to get learners to ask questions. After some of the pictures have appeared, learners can try and predict which picture will appear next, or they can predict which picture will be the last to appear. This could happen in teams. For example, one team predicts which picture will appear next and the other team asks the question which does really appear. If a team predicts correctly, they win an extra point.
Oes school subjectheddiw?
(Is there school subject today?) / Task 2
Typing a sentence with a written stimulus / School subjects
Before the task: Introducing / Revising school subjects - e.g. Adnodd Drilio 5 (Unit 2) or pictures on page 4 of Taith Iaith 1
Oes particular building yn y dref? (Is there a particular building in town?) / Task 3
Typing a sentence with a pictorial stimulus / Buildings in Town
Introducing / Revising buildings in town - e.g. Adnodd Drilio 7 or the pictures in Taith Iaith 2 page 29, 31, 32. Emphasis on: banc, castell, ysbyty, eglwys, coleg, gwesty, canolfan hamdden, gorsaf, archfarchnad, theatr, swyddfa’r post.

Unit 2

Wyt ti ?Ydy e/o/hi?

Ydy’r bachgen/ ferch/y plant? / Ydych chi? Ydyn nhw ?

Question / Activities / Theme
Grammar and Introduction Notes
Wyt ti’n hoffi ...?
Ydy e’n/o’n /hi’n hoffi ...?
Ydy’r bachgen/
Ydy’r ferch / Ydy’r plant yn hoffi ...?
Ydych chi’n hoffi ...?

Wyt ti eisiau ...?
Ydy e/o/hi/y plant eisiau ...?
Ydych chi eisiau ...?
Ydyn nhw eisiau?
(Do you / Does he / she / Does the boy/ the girl / Do the children / Do you/ do they want?) / Drill Resource 4
Spinner (pictures appear in random order) / Food
If the teacher has chosen to drill '...... eisiau?', attention needs to be drawn to the fact that 'n / yn doesn't appear before 'eisiau', e.g. ‘Wyt ti eisiau?’ (Not ‘Wyt ti’n eisiau?’)
Wyt ti’n hoffi ...?

Ydyn nhw’n hoffi ...?
(Do you / Does he / she / Does the boy/ the girl / Do the children / Do you/ do they like?) / Drill Resource 5
School subjects hidden behind a 1-12 Grid / School subjects
The game can be played as a whole class or as two or more teams, with teams challenging each other to ask a question correctly. Also, an element of guessing can be introduced, with teams guessing what subject will be the next / last to appear under the numbers. The numbers themselves could be used as points – e.g. each team is given points to begin. Then, team A chooses a number from the grid – e.g. 3 – and asks a question – e.g. Wyt ti’n hoffi Cymraeg? If Welsh is the picture under the number, the team can add 3 points to their total. But if a different picture appears under the number, they lose the points.
Teacher can also ask for the correct answer if desired - Ydw / Ydy / Ydyn...
Wyt ti’n hoffi ...?
Ydy e’n/o’n /hi’n hoffi ...?
Ydy’r bachgen/
Ydy’r ferch / Ydy’r plant yn hoffi ...?
Ydych chi’n hoffi ...?
Ydyn nhw’n hoffi ...?
(Do you / Does he / she / Does the boy/ the girl / Do the children / Do you/ do they like?)
Wyt ti’n ...?
Ydy e’n/o’n /hi’n ...?
Ydy’r bachgen/ Ydy’r ferch / Ydy’r plant yn ...?

(Do you / Does he / she / Does the boy/ the girl / Do the children / Do you/ do they want?) / Drill Resource 6
Spinner (pictures appear in random order) / Interests
Use the pictures as a stimulus to get learners to ask questions. After some of the pictures have appeared, learners can try and predict which picture will appear next, or they can predict which picture will be the last to appear. This could happen in teams. For example, one team predicts which picture will appear next and the other team asks the question which does really appear. If a team predicts correctly, they win an extra point.
Wyt ti’n mynd i’r ...?
Ydy e/o/hi’n mynd i’r ...?

Ydych chi’n mynd i’r ...?
Ydyn nhw’n mynd i’r ...?
(Are you / Is he / she / Is the girl/ the boy / Are the children / Are you/ are they going to the …?) / Drill Resource 7
Revealing a picture
Hidden underneath individual tiles, is a picture of an enlarged item which could be seen in one of the buildings in town.
white board marker = ysgol (school) piece of plaster = ysbyty (hospital)
cheque = banc (bank)
gym equipment - canolfan hamdden (leisure centre)
popcorn = sinema (cinema)
swimming trunks = pwll nofio (swimming pool)
bottle of tomato sauce = archfarchnad (supermarket)
book = llyfrgell (library)
cross = eglwys (church)
stamp = swyddfa’r post (post office) / Buildings in Town
Game can be played as a whole class or as two or more teams, with the teams challenging each other to ask the question correctly in order to reveal the picture and to guess which question is 'hidden' beneath the buildings. Learners can guess what building the enlarge picture is linked to by asking the relevant question. e.g. popcorn = sinema (cinema) – Ydy e’n mynd i’r sinema?
Two teams could challenge each other and bonus points could be given for guessing the hidden question correctly, (and points could be taken away for guessing the hidden question incorrectly).

Beth ydy ei hoff .... e/o?
Beth ydy ei hoff ... hi?
Beth ydy ei hoff ... chi?
(What is your/his/her favourite …?) / Drill Resource 8
Spinner / Favourite things/interests
Use the pictures as a stimulus to get learners to ask questions. After some of the pictures have appeared, learners can try and predict which picture will appear next, or they can predict which picture will be the last to appear. This could happen in teams. For example, one team predicts which picture will appear next and the other team asks the question which does really appear. If a team predicts correctly, they win an extra point.
Faint ydy pris /
Faint ydy’r ...?
(How much is the price of (the) / How much is the …?) / Drill Resource 9
Finding the cheapest / dearest item / Everyday items
There are prices under each picture. Learners need to ask the correct question each time to find the dearest and cheapest price. This could be done in teams so that there is an element of competition to find the dearest/cheapest price. The teacher can call out the price every time (in Welsh).
Beth ydy enw prifddinas / arian / lliwiau baner...?
(What is the name of the capital city of …? What is the money/currency of …? / What are the colours of the banner of …? / Drill Resource 10
Quiz / General - quiz
The class can be split up into teams to compete against each other, with one team winning a point by asking the correct question and the other team winning a point by giving the correct answer.
Beth ydy .... yn Gymraeg?
(What is … in Welsh?) / Additional drill/game to revise vocabulary using e.g. Drill Resource 1 to 10 vocabulary, as required / As required
This drill (and the next one, below) reinforce the idea that 'ydy' is used when a definition is given. 'ydy' acts as a kind of '=' in the sentence.
Pwy ydy e/o hi ...?
(Who is he/she?) / Additional game/drillto introduce the pattern using children's names in Adnodd Drilio 11 (Drill Resource 11). / Children's names
Using children's pictures in Drill Resource 11 vocab (Geirfa Adnodd Drilio 11) (Unit 4). Introduce children's names with the text showing.
Then turn off text to test how many names the children remember. Then, the class can be divided into pairs or teams to challenge each other:
  • Pair/team asking the question Pwy ydy e / hi? win a point if the pair/team answering the question doesn't know who he/she is.
  • Pair/team answering get a point for each name they know.

Aim of game is to find a type of television programme learners have decided on beforehand by looking at the vocabulary. The class can be split up into sentences if desired, and every team chooses a programme to look for. The first team to find the programme they are looking for 'wins'.
There will be clocks on the screen and underneath them there will be different types of television programme. The teacher can click on each item to make it bigger. When the question 'Beth sy ar y teledu am ... time...?' or 'Beth sy ymlaen am ...time ...?' is asked correctly, the teacher can click again on the item to reveal a type of television programme.

Unit 5

Ble / Pryd / Pam / Sut / Gyda pwy / Efo pwy wyt / mae / maen?

Question / Activities / Theme
Grammar and Introduction Notes
Ble? / Pryd? / Pam? / Gyda pwy/Efo pwy? / Sut?
wyt ti’n / ydych chi?
mae e/o / hi / maen nhw?
(Where? When? Why? With whom? How?
are you / is he/she / are they or
do you/ does he/she / do they?) / Drill Resource 14
1 - 12 Grid / Interests
The game can be played as a whole class or as two or more teams, with the teams challenging each other to ask a question correctly. Also, an element of guessing can be included - with teams guessing which interest will be the next / last to appear from beneath the numbers.
The numbers themselves could be used as points – e.g. each team is given points to begin. Then, team A chooses a number from the grid – e.g. 3 – and asks a question – e.g. Pryd wyt ti’n chwarae tennis? If tennis is the picture under the number, the team can add 3 points to their total. But if a different picture appears under the number, they lose the points.
If some learners are really interested in an activity, e.g. swimming - he/she could be asked whether they would mind being questioned in more detail, i.e. 'hot-seating'. The learners could go through the different question words - Ble...? (Where) Pryd ...? (When?) Pam...? (Why?) Sut ...? (How?) Gyda pwy/Efo pwy ...? (With whom?) Then, after two or three learners are questioned in this way, the class can be split up into two teams. They can challenge each other to see how much they remember about the learners' questions and ask questions in the 3rd person - e.g. Ble mae Daniel yn nofio? (Where does Daniel swim?) Efo pwy mae Bethan yn chwarae tennis? (Who does Bethan play tennis with?) Pryd mae Rebecca yn chwarae gemau cyfrifiadur?(When does Rebecca play computer games?)
Ble mae’r ...?
(Where is the …?)
Sut mae mynd i’r ...?
(How do you/does one get to the …?) / Drill Resource 15
Finding buildings in town / Buildings in Town
Split the class into two teams. In one game, every team will have an opportunity to ask 6 questions. Team A asks team B six questions to begin with and then team B questions team A.
For example, team A asks a question, and if it's correct, they'll get a point, e.g. Ble mae’r sinema? (Where is the cinema?)
Then, team B will suggest a number. Teacher clicks on the number - and it will be revealed whether it is a cinema. If it is a cinema, team B wins a point. If it isn't a cinema, team A wins a point.
The teacher will then click again so that the number conceals the building again. So, the game will include an element of trying to remember where every building was.
When all the buildings are found, the question 'Sut mae mynd i'r ...?' (How do you get to the ...?' can be practised and directions to reach a certain building in town.
Ble mae ...? O ble mae ...?
(Where is? From where do/is/are..?)
Pryd mae ...?
(When is …?) / Drill Resource 16
Quiz / General - quiz
The class can be split into two teams. They can challenge each other, to ask questions first of all. When all the questions have been asked, with a good class only, one team can give the answer and the other team can say what the question was.
Pam wyt ti’n ...?
(Why are you …?)
Pam mae e/o’n / hi’n ...?
(Why is he/she …?) / Task 12
Drag and Drop Activity / Verbs
Pryd mae ...?
(When is …?)
