Fourth Sunday, Ordinary Time

And the Lord said to me, ‘This was well said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kinsmen, and will put my words in his mouth; he shall tell them all that

I command them. If any man will not listen to my words which he speaks in my name, I myself will make him answer for it.”… “What does this mean? A completely new teaching in a spirit of authority.”

Do we realize that from the first days of biblical history, God chose people to lead and guide the chosen people. We are able to name names, such as Moses today, the four great prophets of the first testament and the minor ones as well. Their role was to call the attention of the people, and call His people back to the way of the Lord.

Throughout history, prophetic voices continue to speak. The letters and speeches of the Holy See continue to reflect the teaching of the Lord. Great individuals speak by the witness of their lives. Today, through word and example, lessons are offered for us all. We find these voices in the church, and outside our own Christian communities. Spiritual writers and teachers open the way for us to hear the Lord in our own time, in our own tongues, in our own need.

Names of persons as Oscar Romero, Ita Ford, Dom Helder Camara, Ghandi, Blessed Mother Teresa and John XXIII are easily recognizable, and they too are prophetic voices. What names would you add to your list? And now, the bigger question: Are you listening to that voice?

On Sunday, January 29th, from 2:30 to 4:30 PM, Pax Christi Metro New York (PCMNY) will pay tribute to Fr. Dan Berrigan with a presentation of his writings, music, and testimonies from such invited guests as Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, Elizabeth McAlister, and Frida Berrigan. The Burning Bush: The Words and Witness of Fr. Dan Berrigan will take place in St. Joseph’s Greenwich Village Church, Sixth Avenue and Washington Place, with a simple reception in Casserly Hall to follow. For those of us who remember Fr. Hovda, there will be a mass commemorating the 20th anniversary of his death. Mass will be here on Feb. 6th at 6:15 pm and will be celebrated by Fr. Jim Gardiner.

This weekend we have our annual collection to help in the education of our over 52 young men who are preparing for the priesthood at our Dominican House of Studies. The only funding we receive is from friends like yourselves who help us train the future missionaries, educators and preachers for St. Joseph’s Province. We Dominicans who minister here will be joined by some of these young men in the future. Please be generous in helping us. God has played His role in providing us with a large number of exceptionally qualified vocations. Won’t you now play a role in educating them.
