10.30 – THE EUCHARIST WITH HYMNS

Introit Hymn: 234 [second tune] – Christ, whose glory fills the skies

Collect of the Day:
Let your merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of your humble servants;

and that they may obtain their petitions

make them to ask such things as shall please you;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.Amen.

The First ReadingEcclesiastes 1, 2; 12-14 & 2, 18-23
The Reader says: A Reading from the First and Second Chapters of the Book Ecclesiastes

Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.

I, the Teacher,when king over Israel in Jerusalem,applied my mind to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven; it is an unhappy business that God has given to human beings to be busy with.I saw all the deeds that are done under the sun; and see, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

I hated all my toil in which I had toiled under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to those who come after me—and who knows whether they will be wise or foolish?

Yet they will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun.

This also is vanity.So I turned and gave my heart up to despair concerning all the toil of my labours under the sun,because sometimes one who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave all to be enjoyed by another who did not toil for it.

This also is vanity and a great evil.What do mortals get from all the toil and strain with which they toil under the sun?For all their days are full of pain, and their work is a vexation; even at night their minds do not rest. This also is vanity.

The Reader says: This is the word of the Lord: All: Thanks be to God.

Gradual Psalm 49, read by all together

1O hear ye this, all ye people:

ponder it with your ears, all ye that dwell in the world;

2High and low, rich and poor: one with another.

3My mouth shall speak of wisdom:

and my heart shall muse of understanding.

4I will incline mine ear to the parable:

and shew my dark speech upon the harp.

5Wherefore should I fear in the days of wickedness:

and when the wickedness of my heels compasseth me round about?

6There be some that put their trust in their goods:

and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches.

7But no man may deliver his brother: nor make agreement unto God for him;

8For it cost more to redeem their souls: so that he must let that alone for ever;

9Yea, though he live long: and see not the grave.

The Second ReadingColossians 3, 1-11

The Reader says: A Reading from the Third Chapter of the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Colossians.

So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth,for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

When Christ who is yourlife is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry).On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient.These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life.But now you must get rid of all such things—anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth.Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practicesand have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator.In that renewalthere is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all!

The Reader says: This is the word of the Lord: All: Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: 419 – O holy Spirit, Lord of grace

The Gospel Luke 12, 13-21
Someone in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.’But he said to him, ‘Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?’And he said to them, ‘Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.’Then he told them a parable: ‘The land of a rich man produced abundantly.And he thought to himself,

“What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?”Then he said, “I will do this:

I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?”

So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich towards God.’

Sermon: The Reverend Professor Simon Robinson, Lecturer

Offertory Hymn: 381 – Jerusalem the golden

The Post Communion Prayer, said by all:

God of our pilgrimage,

you have willed that the gate of mercy should stand open

for those who trust in you:

look upon us with your favour

that we who follow the path of your will

may never wander from the way of life;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Post-Communion Hymn: 368 – Guide me, O Thou great Redeemer

6.30 – CHORAL EVENSONG – CHOIR OF THE LAMBERTI-KIRCHE

Responses: Benedikt Brenk

Office Hymn: NEH 413 – Now thank we all our God

Psalm 122 sung by the Choir to the music of Alexander Toepper

1I was glad when they said unto me:

We will go into the house of the Lord.

2Our feet shall stand in thy gates: O Jerusalem.

3 Jerusalem is built as a city: that is at unity in itself.

4For thither the tribes go up, even the tribes of the Lord:

to testify unto Israel, to give thanks unto the Name of the Lord.

5For there is the seat of judgement: even the seat of the house of David.

6O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.

7Peace be within thy walls: and plenteousness within thy palaces.

8For my brethren and companions' sakes: I will wish thee prosperity.

9Yea, because of the house of the Lord our God: I will seek to do thee good. Gloria

The First LessonGenesis 50, 4-end

The Reader says:

Here begins the Fourth Verse of the Fiftieth Chapter of the book Genesis.

When the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph addressed the household of Pharaoh, ‘If now I have found favour with you, please speak to Pharaoh as follows:My father made me swear an oath; he said, “I am about to die. In the tomb that I hewed out for myselfin the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore let me go up, so that I may bury my father; then I will return.’Pharaoh answered, ‘Go up, and bury your father,

as he made you swear to do.’ So Joseph went up to bury his father. With him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,as well as all the household of Joseph, his brothers, and his father’s household. Only their children, their flocks, and their herds were left in the land of Goshen.

Both chariots and charioteers went up with him. It was a very great company.

When they came to the threshing-floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they held there a very great and sorrowful lamentation; and he observed a time of mourning for his father for seven days.When the Canaanite inhabitants of the land saw the mourning on the threshing-floor of Atad, they said, ‘This is a grievous mourning on the part of the Egyptians.’ Therefore the place was named Abel-mizraim;it is beyond the Jordan.

Thus his sons did for him as he had instructed them.They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field at Machpelah, the field near Mamre,

which Abraham bought as a burial site from Ephron the Hittite.After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father. Realizing that their father was dead, Joseph’s brothers said,

‘What if Joseph still bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong that we did to him?’

So they approachedJoseph, saying, ‘Your father gave this instruction before he died,

“Say to Joseph: I beg you, forgive the crime of your brothers and the wrong they did in harming you.” Now therefore please forgive the crime of the servants of the God of your father.’ Joseph wept when they spoke to him.Then his brothers also wept,fell down before him, and said, ‘We are here as your slaves.’But Joseph said to them, ‘Do not be afraid! Am I in the place of God?Even though you intended to do harm to me,

God intended it for good, in order to preserve a numerous people, as he is doing today.

So have no fear; I myself will provide for you and your little ones.’

In this way he reassured them, speaking kindly to them.

So Joseph remained in Egypt, he and his father’s household; and Joseph lived for one hundred and ten years.Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation;

the children of Machir son of Manasseh were also born on Joseph’s knees.

Then Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am about to die; but God will surely come to you,

and bring you up out of this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac,

and to Jacob.’So Joseph made the Israelites swear, saying, ‘When God comes to you,

you shall carry up my bones from here.’ And Joseph died, being one hundred and ten years old; he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.

Magnificat – Schütz

The Second LessonI Corinthians 14, 1-19

The Reader says: Here begins the First Verse of the Fourteenth Chapter of the First Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians.

Pursue love and strive for the spiritual gifts, and especially that you may prophesy.

For those who speak in a tongue do not speak to other people but to God; for nobody understands them, since they are speaking mysteries in the Spirit.On the other hand,

those who prophesy speak to other people for their building up and encouragement and consolation. Those who speak in a tongue build up themselves, but those who prophesy build up the church.Now I would like all of you to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. One who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

Now, brothers and sisters,if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I speak to you in some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?

It is the same way with lifeless instruments that produce sound, such as the flute or the harp. If they do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is being played?

And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle?

So with yourselves; if in a tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is being said? For you will be speaking into the air.There are doubtless many different kinds of sounds in the world, and nothing is without sound.If then I do not know the meaning of a sound, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.So with yourselves; since you are eager for spiritual gifts, strive to excel in them for building up the church.

Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret.For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unproductive.What should I do then?

I will pray with the spirit, but I will pray with the mind also; I will sing praise with the spirit, but I will sing praise with the mind also.Otherwise, if you say a blessing with the spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say the ‘Amen’ to your thanksgiving, since the outsider does not know what you are saying?For you may give thanks well enough, but the other person is not built up.I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you;nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind, in order to instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

The Reader says: Here ends the Second Lesson

Nunc dimittis – Schütz

Anthem: Heinrich Schütz – Singet dem Herrn ein neues lied – Text of Psalm 98
O sing unto the Lord a new song: for he hath done marvellous things.

With his own right hand, and with his holy arm: hath he gotten himself the victory.

The Lord declared his salvation:

his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.

He hath remembered his mercy and truth toward the house of Israel:

and all the ends of the world have seen the salvation of our God.

Shew yourselves joyful unto the Lord, all ye lands: sing, rejoice, and give thanks.

Praise the Lord upon the harp: sing to the harp with a psalm of thanksgiving.

With trumpets also, and shawms: O shew yourselves joyful before the Lord the King.

Let the sea make a noise, and all that therein is:

the round world, and they that dwell therein.

Let the floods clap their hands, and let the hills be joyful together before the Lord:

for he is come to judge the earth.

With righteousness shall he judge the world: and the people with equity. Gloria
