Welcome to Spanish I! This should be a great year, and I look forward to helping you in your desire to learn Spanish. Learning a new language can be both a lot of fun and a lot of work. I want you all to know that I want everyone to be successful in this class, and I am always willing to answer your questions and help if you ask. In turn, I ask that you all do your part by coming to class prepared every day.

Course Objectives: Students will develop knowledge of Spanish language and the many cultures associated with it. An emphasis will be on developing all components of communication: listening, reading, writing and speaking at a middle novice level. This course will meet State of Ohio and national guidelines for foreign language standards. This course will prepare all students to move on to Spanish II

How will we communicate?

-Interpretive: Understandingspeech and writing

-Interpersonal:Understanding and responding

-Presentational: Delivering a written or spoken message

Materials Required:A notebook dedicated to this class

Pencil or pen

Three prong pocket folder

Loose-leaf paper

*A three ring binder is not necessary, but would be helpful to keep notes and homework organized.

There will be bell work everyday. We will review the answers and address any questions each day, but the bell work will only be checked for points on Fridays. Each bell work should be labeled by date and kept in your notebook. Other things to go into the notebook are: Old tests or quizzes, study guides and other important handouts.

Evaluation: All assignments will fall into two categories: Formative or Summative. Formative assessments help to tell me how well you are learning the material presented, while summative assessments show me what you are capable of doing with the language as we have learned it so far.

The different assessmentsare:

TestsHomeworkWriting QuizzesProjects

Listening activitiesParticipation Speaking Presentations Reading

Homework: Homework is assigned almost every day for 5 points, and students must do all assignments completely. All homework must be done independently and before class begins. If I see anyone completing an assignment once the class has begun, or if I sees a bunch of “gibberish” written, the student automatically receives a 0. Copied homework will not be given credit. All assignments must be completely finished, and even not having one or two answers will result in only ½ credit being awarded.

Absences and Make-up Work: If you miss a day of class, it is your responsibility to find out what the assignment was and complete it. If you are in the building during the day, you must get your homework to Sr. Sexton by the end of the day in order to receive credit. All work for prearranged absences (field trips, vacations, etc.) must be handed in before the absence. If you miss the day before a test is given but have known about the test before the absence you are still required to take the test with the class. All make up tests will be done after school or during a study hall.

Computer Use: All students must sign an AUP so we can use the computer lab to supplement the class. When we are using the computer, students may not “surf.” If a student is caught in a site different from the assignment, he will receive a 0 on the assignment. Students must ask permission to use the computers in the classroom, and any use must be related to Spanish.

Use of Class time and Leaving the Classroom: The entire fifty minutes of class must be used solely for Spanish class. Every grading period, you each get three hall passes. If you need to leave during the class period, fill out the pass in your agenda and have Señor Sexton sign it.

Care of textbooks: All textbooks must be covered after the first week of classes.

Online Classroom: There is an online classroom that accompanies this course. Each night’s homework assignments will be posted there, so if you are absent, be sure to look there for any work to make up. Also, there will be writing prompts in the form of a blog posted from time to time and you will be responsible for going to the site and following the instructions and responding to the prompt.

Also, this is where you can find an extra copy of this syllabus and some useful online resources.

Plagiarism: Copying and cheating are school rules and are handled in accordance with the policies and consequences in the student handbook. Plagiarism in a foreign language class includes the following: copying from any written text or any other person’s work, using a Spanish-speaking person or an advanced-level Spanish student to do any of your work, copying and pasting from any source on the Internet, using online translators or aps on cellphones or tablets, and any other way to turn in work that is not your own Spanish.
